Giants’ Strahan Looking at a Hold Out?

Giants defensive end Michael Strahan is one unhappy Strahancamper now a days, so to speak.  His actions may validate his unhappiness.  Star-Ledger writer Mike Garafolo says that Strahan is exploring the option of holding out of Giants training camp in order to get a better contract.  A Giants insider said that Strahan wanted to consult with team general manager Jerry Reese before making a final decision.  Strahan’s agent, Tony Agnone, declined comment on the matter.
As of this writing, Strahan is making $4 million per season in the final two years remaining on his contract.  But Strahan may have limited options.  He is coming off a serious foot injury for starters, he is 35 years old – which is old by defensive end standards.  He is also looking for Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney-type money (approximately $30 million in guaranteed money).  The Giants are for all intents and purposes looking to have a younger, healthier team which explains the release of Luke Petitgout, Lavar Arrington and Carlos Emmons.
A high ranking Giants official who requested anonymity, stated that Strahan, “wants a raise, period”.  Good luck to you Michael in your pursuit, but face it, no team is going to give a player at the twilight of his career Dwight Freeney money.  Five years ago that would have been a possibility, but not any more.  I wonder if this has anything to do with his recent divorce proceedings where he had to give up a sizeable chunk of money to his high-living ex-wife.  That’s speculation of course, but it makes you wonder.  Also, Strahan as of late has been bit by the injury bug (a torn pec in 2004 and the aforementioned foot injury last season).  All those factors play into my conclusion that Strahan, at the end of the day, will clam up and play out the final 2 years on his current contract.
