Fassel Fires Back at Comments Coughlin Made in 2004

Fassel

It took former coach Jim Fassel three plus years to do it, but he finally is firing back at now Giants head coach Tom Coughlin over comments he made about players being hurt when Fassel was the coach in New York. Coughlin on January 7th, 2004 in his first press conference made comments that Fassel was part of the blame as to why quite a few Giants players were on injured reserve. “I am aware of the injury factor, the number of IR’s, which is a cancer, let’s face it,” Coughlin stated that day. “It’s something that has to be corrected. It’s a mental thing, I believe, as much as anything else.” In other words Coughlin was basically stating – it’s your fault Fassel. Well, Jim finally had enough, and on Wednesday on WFAN he spoke back to Coughlin about the situtation. “I took offense to it and I know players had to take offense to it and the medical staff had to take offense to it,” Fassel said.

Now mind you that the whole debate was about the amount of players on the IR. If you look at the regime of Fassel, he had 12 players on the IR when he was relased as coach in 2003. As far as Coughlin and his record – in his first year as head coach he had 18 players on IR, and has placed 47 players on injured reserve in the four years in New York. It’s yet another black eye for Coughlin, who continues to try and find a way to get his 0-2 Giants to play better. Another loss this week vs the Redskins, and you can bet even more wagons will circle in New York.
