What about Derrick?

Derrick WardBrandon JacobsThe good news is that New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs is due back very soon.  The bad news?  Current starting RB Derrick Ward will see a reduced role in the Giants’ running attack.  The most likely scenario would be that Jacobs returns to his starting role, but Ward would share some of the load with fullback Reuben Droughns being an afterthought.

According to Giants head coach Tom Coughlin as told to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, “What I liked about Derrick was the fact that when you looked at him on the field he looked so much quicker.  That in itself could be a dimension to take advantage of.  He has obviously proven that he can perform at a high level.”  While that much may be true, the RB timeshare would also take some pressure off Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

In the meantime, the load goes to Ward.  Also – the Giants will have to ride the momentum they enjoy from last week’s victory over the Washington Redskins.  When Jacobs returns, it will interesting to see what Coughlin does with the running attack.  I personally like the idea of the RB timeshare as it will keep the RB’s fresh and for repetition’s sake, take some pressure off of Manning.
