Reese: Shockey’s Staying

New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey

Despite the fact that New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey vanished from the Giants soon after breaking his leg on December 16 and opting to stay away from the team during the Super Bowl run this season, it appears that Shockey will remain a Giant – at least for this season.

According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, even with all the rumors and speculation of where Shockey may be headed this season, team general manager Jerry Reese told Newsday on Wednesday that Shockey’s “their starting tight end”.  That – at least for now – squashes any rumors that Shockey will either be released or traded, yet the speculation kind of lingers because of the success the Giants enjoyed after Shockey went down with 2 games left in the regular season.

There’s arguments on both sides on why Shockey should either be retained or released.  Firstly, his attitude; his behavior on and off the field has been a reason why quarterback Eli Manning’s play improved – although you won’t hear that from Manning.  But at the same time, despite Shockey’s warts, he is indeed a game-breaking receiver, when healthy, and a decent blocker for a TE.  He had 57 catches, 3 for touchdowns; he wasn’t voted to the Pro Bowl (his 5th had he been selected), but played no small part in the Giants having the 4th-best rushing offense in the NFL this past season.

Now the financials; Shockey is due to make $2.225 million next season along with a $2.4 million reporting bonus.  If for whatever reason the Giants chose to let Shockey go, he would count $3.5 million towards the salary cap.  The current contract Shockey has in place right now is for 5 years, $26 million (an extension, actually); whether releasing him would make good financial sense is speculative, but his salary isn’t excessive insofar as what what the top tight ends earn.
