Burress Won’t Practice Till He Gets a New Deal

Burress

Distractions usually follow a team after success, and for the Super Bowl champion Giants, that distraction started today at the teams camp.  Star wide out Plaxico Burress, who caught the game winning TD in the Super Bowl, has stated that he will not practice during the teams mandatory minicamp because he wants a new deal on his current contract.

“Me and my agent (Drew Rosenhaus) have been trying to get a deal done, so I can (be) a New York Giant for a long time,” Burress said today. “I personally don’t like the way its going. I’m not happy about it and I’m going to choose not to participate.” Burress, who signed a 6-year, $25 million deal in 2005, is slated to earn $10 million over the next three seasons. “We didn’t want it to get to this situation,” he said. “We just tried to handle it in-house and take it that way. But if I’m unhappy I’m going to express it.”

It was thought at first the reason why Plax was not taking part in practice was due to his gimpy ankle, but now we find out that is not the case.  Burress is pretty well paid, as he is making $10 mil over the next three seasons.  He signed a six-year deal worth $25 million back in 2005.  He now wants to be paid like a top NFL wide out.  “We didn’t want it to get to this situation,” he said. “We just tried to handle it in-house and take it that way. But if I’m unhappy I’m going to express it.”

Burress seems to be serious about the demands, as he in not so many words gave indication that the display today may very well last into training camp that kicks off next month.  “We’ll have to see what happens when it comes around,” Burress said. “I have a pretty good idea what I’ll do.”  He’s the Giants best WR, and maybe their biggest weapon.  If they want to avoid a summer of issues, they should do what they can to make him happy before hard feelings get any worse.
