Jeremy! Just Shut up and Play Ball – For Your Own Sake!

NY Post on Shockey

Okay, the Giants turned down what probably will be the best trade offer they’ll get this off-season for disgruntled, slightly crazy, totally dense and immature, tight-end, Jeremy Shockey. So, what next?

Well, number one, his salary this year of about 1.9 million is not a cap killer. Number two, if he stops whining and plays decent ball, he’ll prove to the league that his leg is healed and he’s still a damn good player, which will cause his stock to rise. Number three, if his stock rises, the Giants will get more for him in a trade. Number four, if he keeps his trap shut and plays well — and the rest of the team plays up to their potential — the Giants can have a very successful season. And number five, if, after the season, both sides are happy with each other again, they don’t have to trade him.

The Giants are stuck with him for 2008. But, if they can make him to understand that his goals and their goals are compatible, they may just survive this. Of course, making an overly emotional guy like Shockey — not the brightest bulb in the ceiling fixture — understand is no slam-dunk. But, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus isn’t an emotional mess. He knows with cold, clear, logic that getting Shockey on board is in his best interests, too. A trade and subsequent new contract … or a new contract with Giants if he stays — will be big bucks. The question is, can a loose cannon like Shockey be convinced it’s in his own best interests to just shut up and play ball — for his own sake? What do you think?
