Thoughts on the Defense

When Steve Spagnuolo left for St. Louis, I think we all were concerned about how the defenese was going to be run in his absence. Now that Bill Sheridan, the former Linebackers coach, is the coordinator, much of the system should be the same. What should stay? What should go? Here’s a brainstorm on what I think the Giants defense should look like next year:

Spagnuolo, a disciple of Philadelphia’s Jim Johnson, loved to bring the heat. I think Sheridan should, and will, continue that. With Osi Umenyoria coming back, Justin Tuck won’t have to face constant double teams, and will, most likely, be fresher for the stretch run. I want to see more blitzing from the linebackers.Put Mathias Kiwianuka back at outside linebacker, and make him a blitzing specialist. He could be unstoppable in that role. I want to see more pressure from the safeties. Kenny Phillips has a chance to be a Troy Polamalu type player- a guy who makes plays all over the field. While he continues to mature, blitz him more. Terrell Thomas was a force in the Eagles game. Utilize his blitzing prowess more. Offenses have a ton of trouble against constant pressure. The more the better.

Towards the end of the season, the Giants allowed a bunch of big running plays. How do you stop that? Well, the Giants don’t have a big run clogger in the middle–Fred Robbins is more of pass rusher. If they could sign a Albert Haynesworth, that would fix all the problems. If not, the Giants will have to employ more run blitzes, more run support from corners and safeties, and make sure the first contact is the last contact.

Let’s face it: The Giants had a pretty damn good defense. Not much is needed. More depth, especially at defensive end. I would love for them to shore up the revolving door at outside linebacker. Other than than, there aren’t many holes. They have  very solid corners in Webster, Ross, and  Thomas. Kenny Phillips, Michael Johnson should be starting at safety for the next 8 years. The defensive line is set- Tuck, Umenyoria, Robbins, Cofield. Antonio Pierce is getting up there in age, but he is the captain and the heart of the soul. If the Giants work on the things mentioned above, shore up that linebacker spot, they will have another top 5 defense. Bill Sheridan is inheriting a very good defense. Lucky indeed.
