Toomer Attempts to Clarify

From NY Daily News:

Amani Toomer apparently had some second thoughts about a few of the things he said earlier tonight, and he used his personal website in an attempt to clear some of them up.

In an “interview” on his website, Toomer now says “I absolutely did not intend to criticize nor did I criticize the coaching staff’s game plans. … I do however feel that I was underutilized in the last few games and as I told you earlier in an interview, I thought it was probably to try and develop the younger players. But it is true that I believe I could have made a greater contribution than I did. So, I think some of what got reported was inaccurate.”

OK. Fine. He’s not criticizing the coaches’ game plan. But he absolutely was criticizing their decision not to make him a bigger part of it. Here’s what he said earlier:

• “I just think the way the season ended and how they started going away from me at the end of the year … I mean, I think it ultimately hurt the team and it contributed greatly to our situation right now, being out of it.”

• “It (phasing him out) doesn’t really make much sense when you think about it (with) us being not able to throw the ball effectively and keep the defenses off guard.”

Also, on his website, Toomer now says “I’ve been a Giant all of my career and I think it’s a great organization so naturally I want to end my career as a Giant. … But I don’t want to end my career now so if the Giants don’t have any interest in my continued participation in the organization, I’ll look for other opportunities. Based on how my role declined near the end of the season, I just don’t know how the Giants view my role or even if they really want me back at all. If I were to come back and not really have a chance to compete, then I’d rather go someplace else where I would have a chance to compete. So, I guess it’s fair to say I am conflicted.”

Yes, that’s fair to say. Here’s what he actually said before:

• When asked if he wanted to come back to the Giants or go some place that would use him more: “That’s a good question. I think that’s what I’m going to have to explore. It’s definitely a good question.”

• When asked again if he wanted to stay with the Giants: “Definitely. Always. But I definitely think that in the current situation I don’t think I could go back.”

Finally, on his website, he is asked by the anonymous interviewer “There were also reports that you said your agent has had some discussions with other teams. Did you actually say that?” Toomer’s response: “No, I did not say that.”

What did he say? That he was excited about the idea of free agency and that “I’ve gotten some good responses so far.”

The reporters present assumed those “responses” came from potential suitors – and I’m pretty sure that’s what he meant. Of course, his agent is prohibited from having contact with other NFL teams before Feb. 27, so you can see why Toomer would want to retract that.

It sounds like Toomer wanted to retract a lot of what he said earlier.
