Giants Re-Sign Carr, Cut Madison, Droughns, Knight

From Pro Football Weekly:

The Giants re-signed backup QB David Carr on Monday and released three veteran players — RB Reuben Droughns, CB Sam Madison and S Sammy Knight.

None of the moves are considered surprising.

Carr played sparingly in three games behind starter Eli Manning but was effective in spot duty, completing 9-of-15 passes for 115 yards and two TDs. Most of his action came in the regular-season finale against the Vikings.

“We are excited about having David Carr back,” Coach Tom Coughlin said. “He did a very good job of preparing our defensive team this past year. David helped us prepare for the opponent’s offensive scheme, whether it included a quarterback who was mobile or a drop-back game. The coaches were very pleased with what he did and I just hope it gets better.”

“Last year was just such a positive experience for me I wanted to try to do it again,” said Carr, the former No. 1 overall pick. “Just try and kind of get another one of those years under my belt just learning and continuing to better myself. Honestly, there are spots out there and starting positions and there could have been some things where it would have just been my Houston situation all over again and it wasn’t really something I was looking forward to, to tell you the truth.”

Droughns, Madison and Knight have a combined 33 years of NFL experience, but none of them played a lot last season, falling behind younger players on the depth chart.
