Haynesworth: Giants Offered Me $80 Million

This bombshell comes via the New York Daily News:

Before the Giants went on their weekend spending spree they were serious about signing defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Very serious.

According to Haynesworth, the Giants were serious enough to offer him more than $80 million just a few hours after the market opened on Friday. And while that didn’t put them in his ballpark, it at least got them into the parking lot of the seven-year, $100 million deal he eventually signed with the Redskins.

Haynesworth dropped that bombshell Monday in an interview on The Michael Irvin Radio Show (103.3 FM) in Dallas-Forth Worth. He was in the midst of explaining why the money wasn’t everything to him when he let the secret slip.

“Everybody’s like, ‘Oh, of course you’re going to sign a $100 million deal,’ but honestly I had another $100 million deal from Tampa (on the table),” Haynesworth said, “and I had another $80-something millon deal from the Giants.”

The incredulous host immediately interrupted him by saying “The Giants offered you $80 million? The Giants did?”

Said Haynesworth: “Yeah.”

Of course, you heard it hear first on Friday afternoon about how the Giants called Haynesworth’s agent shortly after midnight and stayed “in the mix” for several hours before the DT signed with Washington at 5:30 a.m.. The Giants’ interest was dismissed in other places as nothing more than due diligence, but it obviously was a little more than that.
