Report: Giants Still Interested in Edwards?

Pro Football Talk think that the Giants could still be interested in Edwards:

By cutting Plaxico Burress more than three weeks before the draft, the New York Giants have essentially put the rest of the league on notice that, if they have a high-end wideout they’d like to trade, now’s the time to get it done.

One name that continues to circulate is Braylon Edwards of the Browns.  He’s entering the final year of his rookie deal, and reports recently surfaced of negotiations between the Giants and the Browns that nearly resulted in a deal.  (The Browns wanted a two and a five and receiver SteveSmith; the Giants offered a two and a five and either Domenik Hixon or Mario Manningham.)

On Friday, former Browns tight end Kellen Winslow threw a little fuel on the fire by telling Sirius NFL Radio (via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News) that Edwards wants to play for the Giants.

“For some reason I don’t [think he’ll play for the Browns in 2009],” Winslow told Adam Schein and Solomon Wilcots of the Sirius NFL Blitz.  “I know Braylon would love to go to New York.  The Giants would fit him to the ‘T’ and he would have so much fun up there.  I know he loves Cleveland but New York would be a great fit for him.”

Winslow later said that Edwards “would love it there.  He’s a city guy and, yeah, I know he would love it there.”

But the price might be higher than the two, five, and Kyle Orton-style throw-in receiver.  Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports that the Giants were unwilling to give up more than a first-round pick and a third-round pick for Edwards, which implies that the Browns asked for more than that.

Which makes sense, given that the Cowboys gave up a first-round pick, a third-round pick, and a sixth-round pick for former Lions receiver Roy Williams and a seventh-round pick.

  1. Kenny says:

I would love it if a 2nd a 5th an mario gets the deal done thats a fair trade 3 for 1

    I agree with keny.

This is a no brainer. If danny ware works out as a replacement for ward, and with the defense coming back healthy AND (this is a big and) if the new d-coach doesnt destroy spagnuolo’s system and completely change the scheme, then a first – third – and manningham for edwards pretty much puts us back in superbowl contention. The giants should do this if cleveland will take it.

  3. shawn says:

    oops, correction…not a first and a third..
    I mean a second and a 5th and manningham.
come to think of it…sweeten the pot for cleveland with a second and a fourth or third.

  4. Why would a 2nd & 5th with our 4th best WR get us Braylon Edwards if they turned down a 1st and a 3rd? Think about it people…

Not to mention the Giants VEHEMENTLY denied ever offering players to the Browns. They specifically mentioned Kiwi, Mario, and Hixon in that denial.
