Smith, Hixon Not Fazed by Trade Rumors

This from

If there’s anyone who should be happy with the Braylon Edwards trade rumors, it’s Steve Smith. After all, he’s the guy the Giants reportedly refused to trade.

“If that’s true, that’s a compliment,” the third-year wide receiver said Tuesday during a break in off-season workouts. “That makes me feel good. But it’s a business and you have to be prepared for everything, and I am. I’m just happy to be here now.”

Still, trade rumblings can be a distraction — no matter in what capacity one is mentioned. And for Domenik Hixon, who was rumored to have been offered to the Browns by the Giants, the distraction had the potential to develop into hurt feelings. But general manager Jerry Reese apparently nipped that in the bud by having a conversation with Hixon recently in which he told the young receiver the rumors weren’t true.

“It’s definitely good to hear that,” Hixon said. “You know, rumors are rumors and the first thing that my agent told me before I went into the draft was, ‘This is a business. … Don’t take things personally.’ But it was definitely good to talk to Mr. Reese and everything, and to have him kind of tell me what’s up.”

Smith and Hixon both said they have no idea if they’ll be traded and that it’s out of their control. But it’s difficult to ignore the rumblings for both.

“People call you — family, friends — (and say), ‘You’re getting traded?'” Smith said. “I’m just like, ‘Hey, I’m just coming to work every day.'”

Smith said the players joke about the rumors in the locker room, but he said “you can’t worry about” the veracity of such reports. Smith also said he’ll be watching the draft intently on Saturday to see what the Giants do and that being traded “is a possibility” in his mind.

“I’m not going to be, like, super-surprised if it happens,” he said. “I’m going to watch it like everybody else. … I’m a fan, too. I like some of the receivers that are out there, so I’m excited to see what’s going to happen.”

Who does he like?

“I like Percy Harvin,” Smith said of the Florida wide receiver. “He’s an explosive guy.”

A reporter then quipped, “Do you like Braylon Edwards?”

“I like Braylon,” Smith shot back. “He’s a good guy.”
