Draft Day–What To Expect

Draft Day is finally here! After months of debate, speculation, and rumors we can finally say the Detroit Lions are officially on the clock, and will select Matt Stafford. But, what can we expect from the Giants tonight and tomorrow? Let’s break it down.

-Trades, Trades, Trades

The Giants have 10 picks, and probably room for 5 or 6 rookies on the roster. Look for the Giants to use those picks to trade up for a player they covet. Latest is that they love Darrius Heyward-Bey. We here at Giants Gab don’t love him. He’s too much of a workout warrior, although his potential is very high. If Heyward-Bey falls past the Jets at 17, look for the Giants to move up. Also, don’t discount a Braylon Edwards trade. Even though most sources say it’s ‘dead’, never say never in the NFL, and Ralph Vacchiano  reminds us that a trade for Eli Manning was ‘dead’ the night before draft day as well. The Giants don’t want to give up their first round pick, but if Jerry Reese wants him, he’ll get him.

– Defensive Depth

Even though the Giants were busy adding defensive players this offseason, the Giants always add defensive depth come draft day. Expect depth in the secondary, and linebacker depth. The Giants will also look for a replacement for Antonio Pierce. Keep your eye on James Laurinaitis. If the Giants wait until Round 2 for a receiver, he could be the pick.

-Offensive Line Depth

The Giants have, arguably, the best offensive line in the NFL. However, depth is lacking. Outside of Kevin Boothe, there is no one. The Giants could select someone with versatility to play multiple line spots.

-Kick Returner

After Domenik Hixon moved into the starting lineup, the return game really suffered. With Hixon likely to be at least the third receiver, the Giants might want to invest a pick in a stellar kick returner. Marcus Thigpen of Indiana,  Lardarius Webb of Nicholls St., Joe Burnett of Central Florida or Mike Thomas of Arizona could be that guy.

-Excitement

Draft Day is all about excitement. Intrigue, trades, drama, the draft is a soap opera all in itself. So sit back and enjoy it.
