Nicks and Barden Impress:

From Vinni DiTrani:

Both high draft picks Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden impressed coach Tom Coughlin with their hands in Friday morning’s first rookie minicamp practice.

“They caught the ball, they caught the ball well,” Coughlin said.

“That’s kind of my job description,” said Nicks, the No. 1 draft pick from North Carolina. “Wide receivers are supposed to catch the ball.”

“I want to do everything well, and catching the ball certainly is part of the equation,” added Barden, a third-round draft pick out of Cal Poly.

Neither dropped a pass in the morning workout, and each caught a deep ball, Nicks from Andre Woodson, Barden from rookie Rhett Bomar. That might not quite qualify them for the Hall of Fame but it’s a lot better than if they had come in dropping every other pass.

Bomar has an unusual delivery, a quick release at about three-quarters angle rather than coming directly over the top.

“He likes to come from here [hand near his right ear] with all inside stuff and he is very quick to release the ball,” said Coughlin. “One thing that will help these receivers is they better get their eyes on the ball because it gets there in a hurry. I like some of what I saw.”

There are 33 free agents in for tryouts in this two-day camp, including three veterans: former Jacksonville TE George Wrighster, one time Green Bay WR Shaun Bodiford and former Dallas P Sam Paulescu.
