Toomer to Chicago?:

From Ralph Vacchiano:

Is Amani Toomer close to finding a new home in Chicago?

Maybe. Maybe not.

There was a report on the NFL Network yesterday that said the Chicago Bears had placed a call to Toomer’s representatives and could be interested in signing the former Giants receiver. But not so fast, says the Chicago Tribune, which reports that the Bears placed no such call.

That report speculates, though, that Toomer’s people have called around the league to see if anyone was interested in their 34-year-old client. And it said “The Bears might be intrigued, but they’re not jumping at the opportunity.”

Sadly for Toomer, nobody has jumped at the opportunity to add him to their roster, even though he caught 48 passes for 580 yards and four touchdowns last year — not bad numbers for, say, somebody’s third receiver. His agents have said that they expected interest in Toomer to pick up after the draft, which was held two weeks ago.

A source close to Toomer also said he had no plans to retire, despite the lack of interest. He still expects to play somewhere in the 2009 season.
