Info on Barry Cofield

Tom Rock of Newsday has an article up about Barry Cofield:

Barry Cofield has been a starting defensive tackle for the last two years. He doesn’t expect that to change, even with the massive additions the Giants have made at his position.

The Giants added free agents Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard to the defensive tackle depth, lest you forget. But Cofield doesn’t think that will cut the number of snaps he plays

“I don’t see it that way,” he said. “That’s not what I’ve been told. I’m a guy who is used to coming off the field. I don’t play on third down predominantly anyway. Me playing first and second down at right tackle, that’s what I’ve done the last few years and according to everything I’m hearing that’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

Cofield underwent surgery on his left knee in February. “An advanced scope,” he described it as. “Very minor.” Now, he says he is ahead of schedule for his return. He’s targeting the start of training camp for that.

“I’m in a good place,” he said.

The knee didn’t suffer any specific injury, it just hurt more and more as the season went on. After the season, though, Cofield said he looked at his left quad – the thigh muscle over the knee – and realized that his left was not close to being as strong as the right.

“When I went back and looked at my quad and how it had deteriorated on me, I realized in hindsight that I was playing on one leg,” he said. “But I was still playing with good technique and fighting through the pain. I feel like I produced and played some of my best games down the stretch when we were actually taking a lot of heat. I was playing well. I’m hoping it affected me. I’m excited about going out there and playing on two strong legs this year. But in reality I definitely wouldn’t use it as an excuse.”
