Some Thoughts And Musings

Not much football stuff is going on right now. Training camp and OTA’s will be starting up soon, but they seem too far away, no? So to keep our thirsty football minds quenched, I’m going to go Peter King Style on you and give you some things I think:

1. I think Brandon Jacobs will emerge as one of the best two or three running backs in the league. Right now, Adrian Peterson is one. He’s the clear guy. But after that? I think there is a big hole. LT has lost a step (or three), and Clinton Portis is hurt too often. I think with the offensive line intact for another year, Jacobs could have a huge year. Huge year.

2. I think Kenny Phillips will be a Pro Bowl Player. He showed flashes of the hard-hitting, Sean Taylor like ability last year. Now, with him a favorite to start, he go out there and make plays. He has great range in coverage, and is a ferocious hitter. Teams will be afraid to run over the middle.

3. I think the kicker position could be in flux. John Carney was outstanding last year–Pro Bowler. But with him gone and the Giants putting back in Lawrence Tynes, there are some doubts. Carney was consistent. Tynes, save for the biggest kick of his life against the Packers, was never unbelievably reliable. I know I always held my breath. Will the Giants bring in competition? I don’t know. I do know with one misstep, the Giants will be on the phone.

4. I think Mario Manningham will break out. I’ve watched Manningham play at college live. He has unbelievable separation skills. He is a deep threat. Problem is, he was hurt in training camp and never fully grasped the offense. With a year under his belt, the offense should be second nature to him. And with Burress gone, the Giants need someone to create mismatches down the field. I think Manningham will be that guy.

5. I think adding Chris Canty was the best addition of the offseason. Not only does he take up space at 6’7, 300, but he has pass rush ability and the versatility to play end and tackle. We all saw Justin Tuck tire out at the end of the year. Now the Giants have a deep rotation. Tuck will have plenty of rest and the line will still be effective.

6. I think these are your players who will have good seasons: Terrell Thomas, Danny Clark, Barry Cofield, Jay Alford, Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham, Brandon Jacobs, Chris Canty, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Kevin Boss.

7. I think these are your players who could be on their last lifelines:  Lawrence Tynes, Sinorice Moss, Michael Johnson, Gerris Wilkinson, and Andre’ Woodson.

8. I think Osi Umenyoria will have a huge year.

9. I think Steve Smith will finally get Pro-Bowl recognition.

10. And I think Eli Manning will continue to be solid.

  1. Mike says:

I like your list! The only thing I would add is that I think the rookies, particularly Nicks, Sintim and Beckum will have productive seasons—-how many days till the opener???

  2. good list.

Sportingnews.com already had Brandon Jacobs rated as the third best running back in the league behind Peterson and Steven Jackson so it’s interesting.

I like Jacobs a lot, big proponet, I’m not sure he’s top 3 running back though yet, but I think he could be especially if he learns how to catch the ball.

  3. Jesse Cassel says:

i love the enthusiasm man and not to be a pesimest but this would be perfection i think agree with some of them. brandon jacobs is a beast mabe the best phisical running back in the nfl but since hes so phisical and he takes a pounding on the field he gets tired and cant be in there every down. he also gets injured and keeps him from starting 16 games. Kenny philips no argument here. with tynes i do believe that the giants will try to find a freeagent a UDFA or pick one up on waivers possibly i also held my breath everytime he took the field, Not fun. with mario manning ham i hope your right but i have a hunch Hixon, yes Hixon, is ganna have a break out year and emerge as the # 1 gy (just call it a hunch). also i dont think Moss is on his last lifeline i think hes already dead i think by the time training camp is over or it may possibly linger to preseason but by the time we play washington there will be no 83 on the team or atleast the jersey wont have moss above it. Manning just needs to get chemistry and timing down with his new WR corp. hopefully one of the guys and him will get on the same page and have a good year. i think smith and manning already have great timing so i dont think its an issue. well Jeremy i hope everything works out this way, i guess will see soon enouph.
