Giants’ Smith to Attend Girardi Alzheimer’s Benefit in Honor of his Grandmother

Giants receiver Steve Smith will be attending Yankee manager Joe Girardi’s Alzheimer’s benefit:

New York, June 8, 2009 — New York Giants leading wide receiver Steve Smith joins a growing list of celebrity athletes supporting Yankee manager Joe Girardi’s Second Annual “Remember When, Remember Now” Alzheimer’s Research benefit on Monday night, June 15, at the Grand Central Oyster Bar in New York City.

Smith, whose grandmother, Lois Anne Smith, died of Alzheimer’s disease, led Big Blue with 57 catches last season. Girardi’s father Jerry, living in Preoria, Illinois, is afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Former Yankees pitcher/YES Network analyst David Cone, who teamed with Girardi for the last Yankees’ Perfect Game in 1999, will receive the second annual Jerry Girardi Award.  YES Network Yankees broadcasters Michael Kay, an event co-chair, John Flaherty, Al Leiter and Bob Lorenz will also be in attendance.  CBS Sports signature voice Jim Nantz, Oyster Bar executive chef Sandy Ingber, Jim Houlihan, partner, Houlihan Parnes Realty, and Cirillo World president John Cirillo serve along with Kay as event co-chairs.

Sara Moulton, the former Food Network host, ESPNews anchor Mike Yam, and Lou-Ellen Barkan, the president of the Alzheimer’s Association New York City chapter who will receive the second annual Catch 25 Award, will also be honored.  Among the sports celebrities also expected to be on hand include: Rangers voice and FOX Sports play by play broadcaster Kenny Albert; FOX & FRIENDS anchor Brian Kilmeade; Neil Smith, the architect of the Rangers 1994 Stanley Cup champions; longtime Knicks radio and television analyst John Andariese; ESPN anchor Chris McKendry; popular New York sports anchor Sal Marchiano; and Shelli Sonstein of Q104’s Jim Kerr Rock ‘n Roll Morning Show. Tickets are priced at $250 per person, and include cocktail party at 6:30 pm, and a bountiful seafood dinner and awards at 7:30 pm.
