Giants Sign Bomar, Barden to Deals

This from Giants.com:

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The Giants announced today the signing of two more of their nine 2009 draft choices: wide receiver Ramses Barden, their third-round selection, and quarterback Rhett Bomar, a fifth-round pick.

To create space on the roster for Barden and Bomar, the Giants released tight end George Wrighster, a seven-year veteran who was signed on May 9, and first-year offensive lineman Mike Fladell.

Barden, 6-6 and 227 pounds, played in 46 games with 43 starts at Cal Poly, where he caught 206 passes for 4,203 yards (a 20.4-yard average) and 50 touchdowns. He set Football Championship Subdivision career records with a touchdown reception in 32 games and with at least one in 20 consecutive contests, topping the previous marks of at least one score in 17 straight contests and in 26 games by Jerry Rice of Mississippi Valley State (1981-84). His 18 touchdown receptions in both 2007 and 2008 set the school and Great West Conference records and rank seventh on the NCAA single-season chart.

In 2008, Barden caught a career-high 67 passes for 1,257 yards. The previous season, he had 57 receptions for a career-high 1,467 yards, a 25.7-yard average.

Bomar, 6-2 and 224, started 11 games as a freshman at Oklahoma in 2005, when he threw for 2,018 yards and 10 touchdowns. He transferred to Sam Houston State, but the NCAA ruled him ineligible in 2006. Bomar played the next two seasons for the Bearkats and completed 417 of 727 passes (57.4 percent) for 5,564 yards and 37 touchdowns. In 2008, he threw for 3,355 yards and 27 scores. Bomar passed for more than 300 yards eight times in 10 games, including a career-high 506 yards vs. Southeastern Louisiana.

My take: I’m glad the Giants are starting to sign draft picks. You don’t want holdouts. Too bad George Wrighster had to be released. We had  the chance to interview him and he seemed like a nice guy.
