Something I rarely see mentioned about Chris Canty is his ability to knock down balls passed over the middle of the field, say to a RB like Westbrook or Jones.

I think he should be able to deflect some passes that could otherwise lead to big plays...we'll see.

Jeremy,

Good article. I agree with most of what you said. However, I do believe that we need a PK other than Tynes; I just don't trust him (in the 2007 playoffs, if Brett goes down the field for the Packers in OT, who becomes the goat?).

Also, I would like to see if Maurice Evans (DE) makes a slight impact in his rookie year; I believe that he is going to surprise some people.

I understand your logic regarding the reduced playing time of D-linemen, but I don't see it as a negative. I think that was the objective. Certainly there are only so many spots on the roster. But last year's precipitous fall in the last quarter of the season had much more to do with the D-line wearing out than the loss of Plax. Sacks, QB pressures, 3rd down stops, etc. were all down toward the end because the guys just wore down or were injured. Well, this season that's not as likely to happen again. The return of Osi and FA signings of Canty and Bernard will prolong the strong play of Tuck, Cofield, Robbins and Kiwi. Rotate in Alford and either Tollefson or Maurice Evans (this guy has big talent potential if they can bring it out of him), and they'll all be fresh the whole game. It's not a shame, because it's about winning, not playing time. The D-line wears down considerably quicker than the O-line, but that presumes it's the same D-line and same O-line. The Giants will be rotating starting quality talent the whole game, keeping the O-line on their heels and QB off balance. When we see the D-line jumping up and down and acting fresh in the 4th quarter, as opposing O-linemen are sucking wind, then we'll see how much of a shame it is. The platooning running backs is a relatively new phenomenon... we'll be seeing the platooning D-linemen because there's starter quality depth.
