Robbins, Boley and Bernard Placed On The PUP:

The New York Giants placed linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackles Fred Robbins and Rocky Bernard on the active physically unable to perform list on Sunday.

The moves with Boley (hip) and Robbins (knee) were expected because the two had undergone surgery.

Bernard, who like Boley signed with the Giants as a free agent in the offseason, was a surprise. He was bothered by shoulder and hamstring injuries in a minicamp in June, coach Tom Coughlin said.

The shoulder has healed but the hamstring injury still bothers Bernard, who signed a four-year, $16 million contract.

Boley, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract, had a torn labrum repaired in June. The former Atlanta Falcon hurt his hip during the Giants’ offseason program.

Boley was expected to miss 8-10 weeks while rehabilitating. Since the surgery, the NFL suspended him for the first game of the regular season for violating its personal conduct policy. The suspension related to a May 2008 incident in which he was charged with battery on his wife after she accused him of becoming “too physical” after an argument.

Robbins had major knee surgery in February. He has started running straight ahead, but Coughlin said he is unable to make cuts.

All three players were placed on the active/PUP list, which doesn’t come with a roster exemption. All it means is those players entered camp with pre-existing injuries are eligible to remain there at the start of the regular season. If that happens, they have to remain on that list until the window between Weeks 6-9 in which they can be activated. None of the three players the Giants put on PUP today appear likely to remain on there at the start of the season.

UPDATE: Jeremy Fuchs here. Bernard was not placed on the PUP, but rather the NFI, or “non-football injury list”.  It means Bernard got injured while not under supervision of team officials.  It also means that he  can not get paid during his time on the NFI.
