And the Giants Didn’t Sign Grey Ruegamer Because…Why Exactly?

Where is he when you need him?

Where is he when you need him?

With almost a week of training camp down, there haven’t been many signs of sloppy play. A good thing. (If you want to read more of our training camp coverage, click here.) But, there has been one issue. And it’s been happening every practice it seems. With Shaun O’Hara nursing a sore triceps, the center duty has gone to Adam Koets and Tutan Reyes, mostly. And it hasn’t been pretty. The center-QB exchange (probably the most under-appreciated part of football) has not gone smoothly. This article profiles it nicely. Now, I hope that O’Hara can get back on the field, and get back quickly. Because depth is hurting in the center position. Koets, naturally a tackle, is probably on his last leg with the team anyway. Tutan Reyes was brought in for depth, but if he can’t master the exchange, he doesn’t have much use on the team. Kevin Boothe has been in there too, but with similar disastrous results. Many take for granted the center-QB exchange, because it’s rarely an issue. But if there are mistakes in every practice, something’s wrong. The Giants need offensive line depth. And they need it now. By my count, there are only 3 backup offensive lineman I would “trust” in game play. Kevin Boothe, Guy Whimper, and Tutan Reyes. But, I would only trust Reyes at guard. Boothe at guard, and hesitantly at right tackle. I would have to hold my breath if Whimper had to come in at left tackle. The offensive line is not a problem. The 5 starters are tremendous. But if one guy goes down (and remember, Kareem McKenzie would often sit out a few plays and Boothe would come in, often with shaky results), the G-Men are in BIG trouble. And by the looks of it, the free agent pickings are slim. If all are healthy, this is a non-issue. But, it could rear its ugly head if there is one. The Giants did not sign Grey Ruegamer–jack of all trades. I’m really questioning that now.
