Giants “Lining up” with a 515

The New York Giants are exprimenting with a new defenseive alignment predicated on getting full use out of all the defensive linemen.

People are calling it the 5-1-5

as in 5 linemen, 1 linebacker, and five defensive backs.

In practice it has gotten Kiwanuka one one side and Umeinyora and Tuck on the other end with Alford, and Coefield in the middle.

This alignenment would seem to put tremendous pressure on the 5 or 6 members up on the defensive line to block the pass rushers coming and would also give enough defensive backs 5 to cover the the Wide Receiver. The complication would seem to come if the offense ran the ball and got past the first line of powerful defense-I think that’s when it could become a problem. A running back going one on one with a linebacker and then into the secondary could be a problem

It’s an interesting take on how to ensure playing time for all the defensive linemen.

Tom Rock of Newsday spoke with Tuck

You’re going to see a lot of that from us,” Tuck said. “Luckily for me this defense and this coaching staff is giving me a lot of opportunity to move around a lot. It presents matchup problems. Think about it, you have an offensive guard and an offensive tackle and you have to face me and Osi on one side where we can do all sorts of games or we can just straight-rush you too. It really allows us to have the upper edge as far as offenses not knowing what we’re doing. They can’t really get a bead on what we’re doing.”

I’ve also been hearing (ie reading a lot, I don’t have any connections unfortuantely) a LOT about how well Jay Alford has been playing in the post-season. Justin Tuck has called him the breakout player on the team this season.

We’ll see.

I plan on doing a roster proejction and analysis soon.

have a nice day, everyone.

I say: Great idea!

I don’t know
