Reese: We’re Close To Finishing Deal with Eli

From NY Daily News:

It is, to say the least, extremely odd that more than a week after agreeing to terms on a six-year, $97.5 million contract extension, Manning still hasn’t signed it. It gets harder and harder every day to believe the holdup is minor when it’s taking so long.
But according to multiple sources familiar with the situation, Manning was being truthful when he called the unsettled details “very, very little stuff.” One source said that there is no anxiety inside the Giants organization about the deal at all, and that they’re proceeding patiently and still expect the deal will eventually get done.
“We think we’re close with that,” Giants GM Jerry Reese said in an interview on WFAN radio this afternoon. “We think it’ll get done sooner or later. Just some language issues we’re trying to work through. We think it’ll get done.”
As you know, the “language issue” is a marketing language issue. The Giants and Manning have several conflicting endorsement deals – – Manning endorses Citizen watches, while the Giants have a deal with Timex, for example. And Manning endorses DirecTV, while the Giants have a deal with Verizon. A report earlier this week said the Giants were looking for a “right of first refusal” for their sponsors, though one source said that is not the case.
The big issues, though – – the money, the football-related incentives and bonuses – – are all done. And both sides seem to believe the marketing stuff will be settled soon.
When? A colleague in the press room had an interesting thought: If you’re Eli Manning and are about to sign a contract that would guarantee you $35 million, would you want to play Monday night if you haven’t signed it? Maybe that’s the catalyst that will finally get this thing done.
