Should Giants Trade for Brandon Marshall?

I’m going to preface this by saying two things: 1) This is not an attack on the current Giants receivers. I’m actually quite happy with them and 2) I have no idea if this is going to happen.

That said, Brandon Marshall is having “trust issues” with the Broncos management, because of the way the team handled his acquittal on misdemeanor battery charges. Marshall has made it clear that he wants to be traded. Are the Giants a fit? They could be.

The Giants don’t have a true number one receiver. While Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith have talent, they are not number one receivers. Marshall is. Last year, he had 104 catches for 1,265 yards and 6 touchdowns. Those are number one numbers. There are problems with Marshall, though. He gets hurt frequently. He’s had run ins with the law. But when he’s healthy, he’s awesome. He’s fast, tall (6-4) and would take the place of Plaxico Burress.

I usually don’t like to advocate for players with character issues. However, I feel this case is different. Going to a strong, stable organization, one that doesn’t have a new QB and coach, could be very beneficial for him. Will New York provide distractions? Yes. But, the Giants seem to do very well with these types of players (except for Plax, but, really, no one saw that coming). With a team with a strong leadership core, Marshall might be able to thrive.

The Giants would have to give up a couple of players/picks for Marshall. I say a second round pick in the 2010 draft, Jay Alford and Kevin Dockery. With the D-line depth, Alford won’t be missed. And Dockery is being beat out by Terrell Thomas for the nickel corner. I think the Broncos would do it. Should the Giants? Should they take a chance on Marshall, knowing he would improve their team, but might cause a few headaches?

Interesting idea. Best would be to trade soon and perhaps be able to include in the deal some of the excellent talent that the Giants will have to cut when rosters pare down. If I understand the process correctly the Broncos would only have a vague shot at Giant cuts if they don’t trade for them. Anyway, something to consider. If it doesn’t cost the Giants too much it’d be worth taking a shot, assuming they then don’t have to cut a potentially valuable receiver to make room for Marshall– and that Marshall doesn’t poison what seems to be (for now) a very clean and coherent Giant team.

You honestly think the Broncos would do that trade? I mean how can they not at least ask for a 1 after the Lions got that and then some for Williams… plus, Marshall is better and younger than him… if it really only takes that much or close to it, I don’t see how you cant do it; and I really like our stable of WRs.

  3. Count me out. Although the propsed trade you have is enticing with losing only a 2nd round pick, I think Jay Alford is the future at Defensive Tackle the next few years because I don’t see either Coefield or Robbins being retained this season.

The Giants have more than a few “character” guys currently.

Michael Boley and Rock Bernard have both been accused of assaulting women.

    Bradshaw had a parole violation

Antonio Pierce was invovled in the Plaxico thing (although acquitted)

Kareem McKenzie has a recent drunk driving episode.

The Giatns do well with these players, but I don’t think they need another one.

Marshall is talented, but he seems WAYY too diva and I don’t want him.

    i don’t think so…

would be way more expensive (WAY more… no chance of this trade happens without at least a 1st round pick), and marshall’s a diva…

i’m happy with our receivers… i think we’ve got talent enough to supply our needs and even more

i think the broncos would do that trade you get a real good DT thats not even at his prime and a decent corner that could be a number 2 plus a 2nd round pick if they could pull that deal id be jumping for joy, hell if i was the gm id even give up a first round. these picks are never sure things you pull this deal of you have a bonafide number one who is and amazing athlete. im not interested in all this diva crap i wanna win now. they have a stunning defense an explosive running game its time to finish the puzzel and bring a game breaking reciever into the mix. count me in
