Giants vs Bears Game Preview

It’s Week 2 of preseason! Can you believe that? The 1-0 Giants take on the 0-1 Bears in our first look at Jay Cutler and the boys from Chicago. You’re going to see more play from the starters this week. Eli and the boys on offense might play the whole first quarter, maybe a little more. Same with the defense. Again, as with all preseason games, we’re looking at the backups, the battles, and the young players. This is the time to see what they have.

INJURIES:

CB Aaron Ross (leg), S Kenny Phillips, DT Chris Canty (hamstring), MLB Antonio Pierce (foot), and OG Rich Seubert (shoulder), LB Michael Boley (hip/PUP), and OG Chris Snee (knee). DT Rocky Bernard (hamstring) is not definitively out, but hasn’t practiced much this week.

OFFENSE:

Look for the first team offense to build upon what it did last week. They were sharp and crisp in their two series. We’ll also see Steve Smith, and this will be the closest to the full offense we’ll see. I’m interested in seeing the wide receivers once again. Will Domenik Hixon build upon a strong outing? Will Mario Manningham continue to separate himself, and cut down on mental errors? How will Ramses Barden and Hakeem Nicks look? It’s good there’s all this competition. Competition brings out the best in players. I want to see if Ahmad Bradshaw can be even better than he was last week. He was all over the place. I’m looking at Danny Ware and Allen Patrick. I thought both were impressive. Ware might be a better pass catcher, which could give him a leg up. I want to see Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum. They weren’t featured much last week. I want to get a second look at Rhett Bomar. He was basically handing off the ball. I want to see him throw more.

DEFENSE:

Last week, it was all about pressure. This week? I want to see more pressure. All the lineman have a game under their belts. Osi has a game under his belt. I thought that the line was outstanding last week, and they will look to build on that. I’m also really interested in the secondary. Stoney Woodson and Bruce Johnson have been the two rookie stars. I though Johnson was the best defender on the field the whole game–he was truly everywhere. They are making it tough on DeAndre Wright. Don’t be surprised to see Woodson and Johnson at safety tonight, either. I loved what Clint Sintim brought to the table last week. I want to see if he can do it again. The defense looked really good, and I want to see them look that good again.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

I thought that Mario Manningham established himself as the favorite at punt/kick returner last week. Can he do even more? I also want to see Lawrence Tynes be more consistent on field goals. He was 1-2 last week.

PREDICTION:

It’s hard to predict preseason games, we don’t know half of the guys on the field. That said, I have the Giants winning. Final Score: Giants 21, Bears 14
