Osi Has “Unexcused Absence” From Practice

Osi Umenyiora is AWOL. The star defensive end was not at practice, and Tom Coughlin called the absence “unexcused”, according to the Daily News. Apparaently, Umenyiora sent a text message to Jerry Reese informing him of the absence. According to Coughlin, “Osi was here this morning and then there must have been something of a personal nature (because) he left,” Coughlin said. “I haven’t talked to him.” There is no word as to why he left. Weird story, and we’ll get you the details as soon as they become available.

UPDATE: (4:34 EST). A bit more info. Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger tweets:

Gathering info on this Osi thing. If what I’m hearing is right this is pretty volatile stuff. Hang tight

And Tom Rock of Newsday tweeted this:

Osi’s absence is not believed to be a contract issue, sources have told me.

But, Bob Glauber of Newsday thinks that it could be money related, citing a source who says that the team is “not inclined to address his contract.”

Sounds like the lid is about to be blown off. We’ll get you info as soon as we get it.

(UPDATE: 4:47 EST) About that lid? It’s off. Mike Garafolo has the info, saying Osi left because of a disagreement with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan:

Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora left the team Monday after a disagreement with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, according to someone informed of Umenyiora’s reason for leaving the facility.

The person, who requested anonymity because the Giants and Umenyiora’s camp haven’t discussed the matter publicly, said Sheridan criticized Umenyiora for making a mistake in Saturday’s game against the Jets The two-time Pro Bowl selection didn’t confront Sheridan, but was clearly upset enough to leave without letting the team know why he was departing. The person also said Umenyiora believed Sheridan was “contradicting” himself.

The person informed of Umenyiora’s reason for leaving said the two-time Pro Bowl selection hasn’t gotten off to a great start with Sheridan, the former linebackers coach who replaced Steve Spagnuolo after the former coordinator was hired as head coach of the Rams in January. The person said Umenyiora has not expressed his frustrations with Sheridan before Friday.

“He didn’t speak to me before he left,” coach Tom Coughlin said.

Umenyiora has expressed his displeasure with the six-year, $41-million contract extension he signed in 2005, but the person informed of his reason for leaving today said money was not part of the issue.

This is BAD news. We don’t know what the mistake that Osi criticized Sheridan for, but, you can’t have your star player and the coordinator on bad terms. This is not good. More as it comes.

UPDATE (5:02) According to Tom Rock, Osi’s agent said he will “probably” be back tomorrow.

Also, a source told me that Osi will “definitely” be fined for the unexcused absence.
