Giants Add Running Back Off Waivers and Make Cuts:

From NYDailyNews

The Giants added a running back today, but it wasn’t the one that was expected.

Rather than promote Allen Patrick from the practice squad, the Giants claimed Gartrell Johnson off waivers from the San Diego Chargers. The 5-11, 218-pound Johnson was the Chargers’ fourth-round draft pick out of Colorado State (He’s from Miami … sorry for the earlier confusion). He is considered a powerful inside runner who was could be good in short yardage.

Patrick, meanwhile, didn’t even get to stick around at all. He was cut from the practice squad earlier today.

Johnson, who rushed for 176 yards on 43 preseason carries, clearly must have caught the Giants’ attention because they decided to go with him over a couple of promising players with more experience. The Giants had what one NFL source said was a “sizeable” workout of running backs today, that included Lorenzo Booker and may have included T.J. Duckett, too.

Booker, a 25-year-old who spent last year with the Philadelphia Eagles, was definitely there, according to his agent, Ryan Slaton. Asked if the workout went well, Slaton said “(Lorenzo) felt it did,” though it did not appear that the Giants were interested in signing him.

Another NFL agent said he was informed that Duckett was present, too, though that could not be immediately confirmed. That wouldn’t be a shock since the former Falcons, Redskins, Lions and Seahawks back would’ve made a lot of sense, given the Giants’ surprising struggles in the red zone and in short-yardage. The 6-foot, 254-pound power back had eight touchdowns for Seattle last year and was once a goal-line monster for the Falcons, with 27 touchdowns in three years (2003-05).

But Johnson was the one who got the nod in the end to help fill the void left when running back Danny Ware suffered a dislocated elbow on the opening kickoff of the season. Ware is expected to be out at least two weeks.

To make room for Johnson and linebacker Michael Boley on the active roster, the Giants cut veteran offensive lineman Tutan Reyes and defensive tackle Leger Douzable. Boley was added to the roster after spending opening week on the suspended list.

Giants also added TE Bear Pascoe and DB Michael Coe to the practice squad, while cutting DeAndre Wright, and TE Kareem Brown

  2. I just dropped Gartell Johnson from my super deep, fantasy league…

I am surprised and intrigued by all these moves, but let it be said that those short yardage situations — if Jacobs can’t punch it in then there is a larger problem at work… namely not mixing it up enough to create uncertainty in the defense, what i mean is they are not passing enough in the red zone.

its asking alot to out-perform a defense stacked in the hole youre supposed to run through because they know exactly what you’re going to do… try a executing a fake and i guarantee success next time around.

After one game, I don’t think the Giants redzone troubles are that great. The Giants didn’t have that consistent of a running game against the redskins. It also doesn’t help that redskins knew exactly what was coming at the goalline. They need to mix it up some more.

I’d rather have Jacobs instead of Duckett in the redzone any day.
