Giants Chargers Game Preview

The struggling Giants take on the Chargers in the first time Phillip Rivers and Eli Manning have met. I’ve said this a bunch: This is a must-win game for the Giants. A win would give them good momentum heading into the bye week.

OUT: CB Aaron Ross (hamstring)
QUESTIONABLE: DT Chris Canty (calf); LB Michael Boley (knee).
PROBABLE: RB Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle/foot); WR Mario Manningham (shoulder); QB Eli Manning (foot); TE Kevin Boss (ankle); WR Sinorice Moss (foot)

OUT: C Nick Hardwick (ankle)
DOUBTFUL: LB Tim Dobbins (knee)
QUESTIONABLE: LB Kevin Burnett (ankle); DT Ogemdi Nwagbuo (ankle)
PROBABLE: TE Antonio Gates (foot); S Steve Gregory (ankle); DE Travis Johnson (groin); LB Shawne Merriman (foot); P Mike Scifres (groin)

This is the week Eli needs to get back on track. He’s struggled the past couple weeks; his decision making is very poor. He’s forcing balls into coverage. Also, teams are starting to key in on Steve Smith. The Giants secondary targets–Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Domenik Hixon–really need to step up, or else we’ll see Eli forcing it to Smith all the time. I think this is also the game where Brandon Jacobs goes crazy. We’re seeing him break out. But, we’re not seeing the 130 yard games. I think we’ll see that today. If we see that, that also means Ahmad Bradshaw will look like the Bradshaw of the early season. As Jacobs goes, so does Bradshaw. I also think, and I’ve been saying this for weeks, that Kevin Boss will have a big day. We saw more of him against Philly. It seems that Gilbride is starting to come around to the idea that utilizing Kevin Boss is a good thing.

Well, we got what we asked for. No more CC (Can’t Cover) Brown. (Quick aside: I was listening to WFAN yesterday, and a caller was talking about the Giants defense. After saying how he never thought he would miss James Butler, he talked about the ineptitude of CC Brown. He said something along the lines of, “CC Brown is, or as some people call him Can’t Cover, one of the worst signings of the Reese Era.” I think GiantsGab started the Can’t Cover Moniker. Pretty cool, huh?) We’ll have to see how Aaron Rouse does. You can bet the Chargers will try to exploit him. They’ll throw deep early and often. I have absolutely no idea how Rouse will do. No idea. That’s very worrisome. In better news, the Giants should get Michael Boley and Chris Canty back. That is HUGE. Boley will help the pass rush, and limit big plays from Antonio Gates. He’ll do a better job of containing Darren Sproles. Chris Canty will help in the pass rush as well as in run defense. Two big additions. Even with these guys, the Giants will have to find a way to stop Sproles. He’s dangerous running, catching, and kick returning. If the Giants stop him, it will go a long way towards a win.

The Chargers are a great offensive team. Phillip Rivers is a tremendous quarterback. Vincent Jackson is a great receiver. Antonio Gates is the best tight end in football. Darren Sproles is slimy. Even though LT is not the same, you still have to account for him. The Chargers will put up points. No question about that. The key is limiting the time they have the ball. And you do that with a strong run game. The Chargers defense is good, but it’s nothing special. Shawne Merriman is no longer “lights out”. Antonio Cromartie doesn’t seem to make the big plays he used to. The defense can be beat.

Another matchup I don’t like. With the Giants defense struggling, and an unknown commodity at safety, the Chargers offense could put up big points. Like I said, the only way to combat that is with a strong run game–something I think will happen. Even so, I’m worried about the unknown–Aaron Rouse. It could be brutal. FINAL SCORE: Chargers 23, Giants 10

Nice to see Barden isnt on the inactive list. I’d like to see Barden and Sintin get some play time today. Even if Eli doesnt go to Barden, the defense will have to respect him in the red zone b/c of his height.

short passes, short passes, short passes.

to boss, smith, hixon, bradshaw, jacobs — whoever.

    work boss in early.

work bradshaw in early instead of letting each take turns for long stretches of time. mix it up, become unpredictable.

    stay creative.
