Strange Coincidence

Here’s something weird that has been happening for me, and I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or the luck of the Irish Pub or what, but…..

EVERY time I’ve gone to this central Virginia fan’s Giants Meetup at Finn McCool’s Irish Pub – the Giants win.

Every. Single. Time. It’s gotten me pretty shaken at this point, but it’s true.

So here’s the back story: Although I am from upstate NY originally, I currently live in Richmond, Virginia. Both my family and my wife’s family who still live in NY are Giants fans… especially the family on my wife’s side — die hard Giants fans.

Since I am living in a Redskins market, every time the Skins play at the same time the Giants do…. I have to scramble to find the game. So during week 3, our parents came down to see their new grandson and of course the Giants were playing Tampa Bay that Sunday. The Skins also were on at that time so my father-in-law suggested we find a sports bar with the dish to watch the game and bring the whole family for my son’s first Giants game out at the sports bar. I did some quick research and found this Giants Meetup 15 minutes from my house in Richmond, at this Irish sports bar called Finn McCool’s that has drink specials and free burgers during all NFL games. Perfect.

We go.
The owner is from Jersey, great guy.
The game gets put up on the big screen because it’s a Giants Meetup event.
The Giants dominate.
The fare is great.
Everyone is happy – including the baby, right?

Well it turns out that the next two games would also be blocked out for my market… so I went back to join the Meetup again. And each time the Giants won… so now I’m like: I love this place!

Then comes New Orleans and Philly, games that I watched from my own home and from Spain while I was there. It’s too depressing to relive, forgive me.

Then Arizona comes along and is the Sunday night game — no need to go out. Another Loss.

Now here is where it gets crazy. San Diego. The game was not on at home so I went to the Meetup again with my wife and son and extended family. Baby starts to act up a little bit, so we decide the Giants have it in the bag and we pack it up. By the time we left the bar and got home the Giants had lost. I was not only shocked, but now all of a sudden nervous that some cosmic force is preventing the Giants from winning unless I’m out watching them at the weekly Giants meetup.

This week was the ultimate test of my theory — and the Giants ended up winning the game. But the question is, where was I watching the game? At home or at Finn McCool’s?

I’ll repeat my premise:

EVERY time I’ve gone to this central Virginia fan’s Giants Meetup – the Giants win.

It looks like the Giants have a good chance to make the playoffs considering the outcome of last nights game, but what’s more amazing is the fact that they are guaranteed to run the table as long as I attend the Richmond Meetup!

Thanksgiving night, it’s going to be a long drive back from upstate NY to catch that game in Richmond!!’

Seriously though, it’s been a great time out in the West End Finn McCool’s every game I’ve seen there — there’s lots of room for even more mid-Atlantic Giants fans to come out and enjoy the game among friends and fellow fans. So to all the transplants down here in Central Virgina like me dying to see the Giants pull out a few more wins on the road to the playoffs — I hope to see you there next game if you can make it.

Im a diehard giants fan who’s been going to VCU for 4 years now. The other fan i had in town just moved to Chicago…ive been following this site only since the start of the season but i feel almost shame to find out this has been going on in Richmond and the internet this entire time. Thanks for the giants perspective deep in the heart of depressed skins country and the heads up

    • Hey — thats why I thought I’d post it!

I am at VCU myself over in the arts building, we’ll have to hook up one of these games and have hopefully a celebratory beer.

Banditos was awesome during the 2007 playoffs, I’ll never forget that Greenbay game… the bar was filled with crazy ass Packers fans and I was one of two Giants fans…. I was of course invited by a Packers fan, but my new friend and I had the last laugh when Three Tynes the Charm hit that final kick.

You do realize, Andrew, that you have to go this bar for the rest of the season. This is a commitment. Can’t give up now. If Central Virginia wasn’t a 7 hour drive from me, you’d see me there too.

If you showed this post to a non sports fan, they would not get it. My sister is the biggest non sports fan. She doesn’t get it. As she once said to me, “Why can’t you just Google the score?”. When we were younger, my dad and I would kick her and my mom out of the room if our sports teams were doing well. Even today, my dad kept my mom out of the room for the entire World Series, even though my mom is a die hard Yankees fan.
