Michael Johnson Could Be Out Sunday

Safety Michael Johnson did not practice today with a groin issue, and it’s not known if he will play Sunday against the Cowboys. As Johnson said:

“I have a chance to play. We just have to be careful.”

As Jenny Vrentas reported, if Johnson can’t go, Aaron Rouse and CC Brown will be the starters, with Aaron Ross seeing significant amount of time in sub packages. In other words, Michael Johnson better play, because the thought of CC (Can’t Cover) Brown and Aaron Rouse in the same defensive backfield is beyond terrifying. Get well, Michael.

Actually, given Jesse’s commentary about safety play yesterday, it might actually be an upgrade if Johnson is out. I don’t dislike him with the same intensity that I hated James Butler, or that I presently loathe Can’t Cover, but he’s quietly having one of the worst seasons in the league. If they sub Ross in at free safety in their base package, it might give us the deep cover speed we need to stay with Austin in the two-deep look. That would give us Webster, Thomas, and (B) Johnson as our top three corners, which I’d be totally OK with. At this point, we’ve seen that the older guys don’t have anything left in the tank, so let’s put out the young blood and see what happens, y’know?
