Giants Roundtable: Dallas Game Recap

It’s getting close to the end of the semester for me so I’ve been getting things out a little later than I would like, but here is the Re-cap from the Giants-Cowboys game.

First I want to direct you to

A site I told you about recently. It breaks down EVERY play of the year for every team.

And the Giants-Cowboys game is finally up.

The scoring system works like this.

An average play is a Zero.  Each play is graded, a zero is basically everyone carrying out their assignments. If Jacobs runs up the middle for a gain of three yards, everyone on both teams probably gets a zero on the play (I mean as long as it was run of the mill and not a diving tackle or something)

Well for the game grades out a few Giants players with positives.

On offense the only player to receive  better than a 1 (consistent better than average production overall for all areas of a player’s duties) was Kevin Boothe.

Kareem Mckenzie 1.0

Hakeem Nicks .08

Brandon Jacobs .08

(Steve Smith was probably negatively affected by all of his drops and also by his run blocking)

On Defense

Aaron Rouse 2.3 (Over a 1 is a good game)

Danny Clark 1.6

Aaron Ross 1.6

Barry Coefield 1.2

Terrel Thomas 1.1

Chris Canty .09

Take it for what it’s worth.

It’s a very interesting web site.

Go check it out: it shows how many times a player was targeted, how many sacks, hits Tackles, missed tackles pass break ups, Stops ( solo plays a defender makes that are directly lead to an offensvie failure)

I’ll have the Eagles-Giants preview up on Saturday morning.

As always I have with me today: Fuchs, Andrew, and Mark Piccucci.

Games Ball Goes To…?

Bill Sheridan who rallied his troops and made one of the biggest 180’s happen with his team at a most critical juncture. Great job, coach.
The entire team, they all stepped up their game and pulled off the victory.

I would say Brandon Jacobs. That 74 yard touchdown run was awesome, and it probably will be the boost he needs to get his game going

I would like to give a game ball to Steve Smith, but he had 10 too drops.  I’ll give one to Hixon for putting the game away and making sure that the Giants couldn’t blow another late 4th quarter lead (which they really tired to do)

Did the Giant Save their season…do they make the playoffs?
I always thought that if they beat the Cowboys the Giants would make the playoffs, but now I’m not so sure. This is a tough game against the Eagles. We saw that our secondary is suspect, and the Eagles passing game is better than the Cowboys. Tough matchup. There’s a chance, but they need to beat Philly

It’s too early to say that the season is saved but they extended it.  Basically the playoffs start on Sunday.  If they lose I believe they are done.

I’m not sure yet. We’ll see. The Giants have placed themselves into a position where they control their own fate. If the Giants win out they will be in the playoffs (because Eagles lost to Dallas already and Giants arleady beat Dallas and since Dallas plays the Eagles one of them will have to have the same record as the Giants and they would hold both tie-breakers). The Giants can also get into the playoffs with winning only two of their final four games.

A lot of how the season will turn out hinges on what happens this weekend with the Giants, Cowboys and Chargers.

Thankfully the Cowboys have to play the Chargers, Saints, At Washington and the Eagles in the last four weeks (all loseable games).

The Giants definitely have a chance.

Another big game for Steve Smith Vs Dallas. On the season he now has 979 yards and 5 Touchdowns….is he pro bowl bound?
Yes he is. He’s had a tremendous season. He’s filled the void for Plaxico, and has become one of the best receivers in the game.
It was like the Cowboys decided not to cover him, and he dropped several other passes too that would have really exposed how open he was all game. I’m not sure what the Cowboys were doing by not accounting for the Giants #1 receiver, but at the same time I’m glad they were doing whatever that might have been instead of you know, covering Smith.
I hope so, he definetely deserves a spot

Best answer goes to….Mark!

I agree, I think he deserves to and I hope he does, but I’m not sure he will get enough votes. He does NOT have enough votes currently so go vote for him!

Brandon Jacobs touchdown pass reception was….?
A great play that started from a bad play from Cowboys linebacker and a great finish from Jacobs and downfield blocking.
Incredibly awesome. Could not have come at a better moment

A thing of beauty — he shot out of the backfield and turned up the sideline with incredible speed. It was like he was born to make that catch and run… talk about setting an example and being a leader. Simply amazing effort on that play, great call and great execution.

I will say Suprising. Usually as he’s turning up the field he drops the ball. usually someone would be able to catch him from behind (he’s fast for a big guy, but he’s not faster than most Defensive Backs) .

What a huge play.

 How about Jonthan Goff’s performance?
For being his first start I feel he played well.  I like the change and hope he does well the rest of the season

I thought he was good. Jason Witten had a lot of room to run, but Goff didn’t make any mistakes. Solid showing.

He was fine. I think energy-wise the Defense as a whole played to a much higher level of intensity. Goff got physical with his tackles, and while Jason Witten gashed the Giants all game over the middle — which is Goffs area now — I still think it was an improvement. The Giants swarmed and didn’t miss tackles or assignments, stepped up in run stopping. Overall a good game for the rookie.

I thought it was nice.  Do I think we have found our future middle linebacker?

No, not yet. He didn’t impresse me THAT much. I’ll have to see more from my boy Goff before I make any definitive statements.

Anything else to add…?

How bout that return game, Bartolis?  Anything YOU care to add? Haha!  😉

(Bartolis note: Andrew is referring to a question I asked him about last week about how poorly the return game had been doing lately. So I guess I can say Finally! Let’s see some more. Hixon is a good return man, but I’m still not impressed with the blocking in the return game. )

If you thought Dallas was big, Philly is even bigger. I think the Giants will need to limit the coverage mistakes to beat Philly. We’ll see what happens

The certainly now have a shot. If the Giants can beat the Eagles at home Sunday night and the Cowboys lose to the Chargers — the NFC East is all tied up and I think the Giants move ahead slightly in the tie breakers. With a win this weekend they have a good shot to get into the lead and make the playoffs… assuming they can also beat the Skins and Carolina at home. The Minnesota game will be a great one to watch if that happens. Is everyone else getting excited about this like I am?!
