Next Day Thoughts: Giants Eagles

Well, that was a rough one. Big thanks to Andrew for filling in for me (virtual round of applause). I was able to catch up on the game (thank you DVR) and am ready to provide some Next Day Thoughts, Giants-Eagles style.

-This defense sucks. They really do. Whenever you have a linebacker on a receiver, even if it’s just once, things are not right. Michael Boley should never be covering DeSean Jackson. I know the Giants made some big plays on defense, but when you gain 500 yards on offense, you shouldn’t lose. The Giants just couldn’t stop the Eagles.

-This offense is awesome. They really are. Eli had one of his best games of his career. Brandon Jacobs finally ran with a purpose (more on that later). True, the wideouts dropped some passes, and Mario Manningham needs to learn what a sideline is. But, all of Eli’s throws were on the money. Jacobs was pounding the rock. Bradshaw looked good. They can win in a shootout. They just might not be able to stop anyone.

-Brandon Jacobs, ladies and gentleman. THAT’S WHAT WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR! I think it all started with the fumble. He seemed determined to make up for it, and he did. You have to wonder where the Giants would be if we saw that same determination all season long. But, it was good to see him back.

-Hakeem Nicks will be a Pro Bowl receiver for years to come. To make that TD catch, after dropping two in a row, takes an amazing amount of concentration. Good for him.

-Congrats to Steve Smith for setting a new single season receptions record.

-Back to the defense. Their main focus in the draft has to be in the secondary. I know there were injuries. But, our lack of depth was exposed. Either a top cover corner, or a ball hawking safety would do fine.

-DeSean Jackson is a hell of a player. He was passed by all 32 teams in the draft. Question time: Would you take Jackson or Kenny Phillips, who was the Giants 1st round pick that year? Phillips has potential, but Jackson is a star.

-Johnathan Goff is a keeper at middle linebacker. Really impressed with him.

-Still need a pass rush. Not the same since Strahan left.

-And, finally, can you tackle someone!?! I’ve never seen such poor tackling, by both teams. Coaches have to get back to fundamentals.

-One more thing: We’re doing a live chat at some point this week. Not sure the exact date, but I’ll be sure to let you know in advance.

It was a great game to watch — the crowd was hugely into it.

I’m only sad that the Giants couldnt find a way to win that one, they were in position as Coughlin put it.

In position to win that one… no doubt about it.
