Giants’ Playoff Hopes Increase With Packers Loss:

Here are the updated playoff options courtesy of Patricia Traina:

Option 1: The Giants will clinch a wild card by winning their remaining three games AND if either Dallas OR Green Bay loses one of their final two games.

Why? The three teams would be thrust into a three-way tie at 10-6. In this scenario, The Giants would get the fifth playoff seed (which as of this writing would draw Arizona) because the Giants beat Dallas in the head-to-head tie-breaker AND they also edge Green Bay in the common opponent tie-breaker, which comes after conference record which if given this scenario, both Green Bay and the Giants would be tied at 8-4.

Ok, so let’s remember that Dallas, New York and Green Bay’s remaining games are against NFC teams. If option one were to occur, the Giants’ common opponents with Green Bay are Minnesota, Tampa, Dallas and Arizona. Three straight Giants wins would give New York a 3-1 record over common opponents while the best Green Bay can hope to finish is  2-2 (they still need to play Arizona). Moreover, if the three teams have the same record by the season’s end, Dallas is eliminated because of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Option 2: The Giants will clinch a wild card by winning two of their remaining three games AND if either Dallas OR Green Bay loses their two remaining games.
