An Early Look At Free Agency

I’ll obviously get into previews of players I like, Giants needs and etc at a later date, but I just wanted to try and start compiling a list of potential free agents to get us away from the season that was and to start moving on.

The sites I’m using to cross reference becuase N.F.L.com doesn’t have one yet are walterfootball.com, footballsfuture.com, kffl.com and nfl.com link to an associated press story about restricted free agents if there is no cap.

First for the New York Giants These Players are going to be Unrestricted Free Agents (meaning that any team can sign them) if there is no cap (which appears likely right now)

Jeff Feagles

Fred Robbins

David Carr

These players are going to be restricted free agents if there is no cap.

(quickly: generally players need to have four years of N.F.L. service to become an unrestricted free agent, but if there is no cap which seems likely for 2010 then players need to have six years of service).

Domenik Hixon

Chase Blackburn

Kevin Boothe

C.C Brown

Kevin Dockery

Barry Coefield

Sinorice Moss

Guy Whimper

Derek Hagan

Gerris Wilkinson

Danny Ware

Dave Tollefson

Of these, Only Dave Tollefson and Danny Ware are restricted free agents if there is a cap (which seems unlikely).

Restricted Free Agents can be offered tender by the team they are currently on and any other team can sign those players, BUT they have to give up draft picks in order to do so-the highest tender would cost another team a 1st and a 3rd round draft pick.

All right, everyone following.

Now, you can go to the sites I mentioned to see ALL of the free agents, but I’ll just list some of the bigger name, unrestricted free agents as it stands now (but this can change if there is an uncapped year, in order to figure out who would then become restricted…it’s simply anyone who has played more than 6 years in the N.F.L. Less than 6 years and they are restricted).

I’ll highlight in Blue positions or certain players I think should interest the Giants

QB: Jason Campbell, Chad Pennington, Rex Grossman, Tavaris Jackson, Kellen Clemens (jets)

RB: Mike Bell, Kevin Faulk, Leon Washington, Cadillac Williams, Willie Parker, Darren Sproles, LenDale White, Jerious Norwood, Chester Taylor, Jerome Harrison,

Ronnie Brown is restricted.

WR: (this is the unit hurt most by an uncapped year because there are some big names who would no longer be unrestricted, which includes Miles Austin, Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards, Vincent Jackson, Michael Jenkins, Lance Moore, I think Malcom Floyd is here too, I know he’s a free agent, but not sure what he is based on cap)

Unrestricted regardless of cap or uncapped are: Terrell Owens, Mushin Muhammed, Antonio Bryant, Derrick Mason, Chris Chambers.

TE: Owen Daniels, Tony Scheffler, Ben Watson, Alge Crumpler

Kicker: Neil Rackers, Sebastian Jaikowski, Stephen Gatowski, Jeff Reed, Jay Feely

Punters: Jon Ryan (Seattle Seahawks), Sam Koch (Baltimore), Michael Keonen (Atlanta Falcons)

Offensive Line: Jahri Evans, Logan Mankins, Marcus McNeil, Donald Penn (Tampa Bay), Charlie Johnson (Colts), Jared Gaither (Baltimore, restricted and unlikely to go anywhere)

Defensive Line: Juluis Peppers, ( uncapped year can you say yahtzee!), Richard Seymour (winner and good), Kedric Gholston (Was), Tank Johnson

3-4 DT (unless we change they’re not getting highlighted in blue) Vince Wilfork, Casey Hampton, Aubryo Franklin

Linebacker (what we’ve all been waiting for)

Shawne Merriman (restricted if uncapped), Barret Ruud, Karlos Dansby, Demco Ryans, Kirk Morrison, Derrick Johnson (Kansas City), Jason Taylor, DQwell Jackson (more of a 3-4 ILB), Angelo Crowell,

Defensive Backs: Dunta Robinson, Will Allen, Dre Bly, Carlos Rodgers,

Safeties: Oshimo Atogwe, Antoine Bethea, Darren Sharper, Atari Bigby, Daniel Manning, Roman Harper.

There you have an early look at Free Agency. Remember the uncapped year works two ways:

First players with less than 6 years are no longer free agents,

BUT ALSO good players who have wore out their welcome or have contracts teams don’t like can be cut without penalty

for the Giants speculation beings for plyaers like Osi, Brandon Jacobs, Rocky Bernard

So there might be some good players who are coming off dissapointing years who might be available.

Have a nice day, everyone.

One thing I am unclear about (actually there are a lot of things).

IF there is an uncapped year in 2010 and teams like the Jones’s and Snyder’s go way over the cap to ensure a winner, what happens if the is a new CBA in 2011 that has salary cap issues in it?

Obviously the teams over the cap can’t just cut and run because of contractual obligations (only players don’t seem to care that they signed a contract last year and now want to renegiotiate).

How does this issue get resolved?

Safety: Antoine Bethea from the Colts is a playmaker. Paired with Philips we’d have some talent at safety next year. Atari Bigby is a distant 2nd place though.

LB: I think Demeco Ryan would be great for us. A smart MLB who could be an excellent replacement for Pierce. Morrison gets my 2nd place vote. He’s on a terrible team in the Raiders but from the small sample size I’ve seen, the guy hustles and makes plays.
