Bucs Interested in DB Eric Berry

All things told, the Giants are going to need a crazy good safety next year. If the Gmen do run a Tampa 2 scheme as many think they will due the hiring of Perry Fewell, a lot of pressure is going to be put on the secondary to make plays – consistently. Can they get that kind of production from Kenny Phillips returning from a serious injury? Probably not. CC Brown and Michael Johnson can’t be trusted anywhere away from the huddle, either. So what are the Giants to do with their secondary? Where is this playmaker going to come from?

Many have discussed S Eric Berry as the magic bullet here at Giants Gab. He’s familiar with the Tampa 2 scheme that the Giants new DC likes to run. He was awarded the best DB in the NCAA. He draws comparison to Ed Reed. But there is a catch… he is expected to go early as a top 5 pick. Crapola.

Bartolis will tell you religiously, safeties don’t typically go that early in the draft. But Berry is not your typical DB, he’s a star. And teams that get to pick early like the Tampa Bay Bucs, who also desperately need a safety, and who also will run a Tampa 2 (as they should just because given their namesake)… Berry may not be around 12 slots later when the Giants get the nod.

But there is some good news on the horizon — atleast according to the Tampa Tribune — the ailing defensive line might have to be addressed first with the top pick. And even if they do decide to address their secondary, the Tribune highlights Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy as the top choices… but note Berry as the third option.

But, it may be futile to expect Eric Berry to be around after 14 other picks are exhausted before the Giants get a shot. And who knows, if Berry is expected to be a top 5 pick then St Louis, Detroit, Tampa, Washington, or KC may be the ones who snatch him up.

So my point here folks is this: let’s not get our hopes up when it comes to Eric Berry going to the Giants.
