Matt Mosley reports that New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith took part in a conference call Monday regarding his upcoming Pro Bowl appearance in Miami. Smith made it clear through his agent last month that he hopes to have a contract extension heading into the 2010 season. Smith is signed through next season (his fourth), but he’ll be an unrestricted free agent until after his sixth season if a new CBA is not reached.
Smith was asked whether he thinks players change their approach when they’re hoping for a new contract.
“I have seen that happen and people talk about that,” said Smith. “I have goals. I have a lot of goals in the NFL that I want to accomplish. I think that working hard and doing everything that I have done to get to this point will just make me that much better in the future. I am not worried about the contract, that is for my agent to deal with. I am going to keep working my butt off for the Giants and myself.”
It would not surprise me if general manager Jerry Reese gets something worked out with Smith this offseason.
Give that man his money Mr. Reese!
