Ranking The Giants: Special Teams

Can you believe it? This is our last installment of Ranking The Giants! (feel free to cry). To read the other Ranking The Giants editions, click here. We move onto the Special Teams, who had a pretty up and down year. Jeff Feagles finally started to show his age. Lawrence “Some of The” Tynes was streaky as ever. Save for a few games, Domenik Hixon didn’t do much as a kick returner. But, we trudge on. Let’s Rank The Giants, Special Teams style.

JEFF FEAGLES:

Y’all know of my professed love for Mr. Feagles. But let’s face it: He was awful this year. He was. He has no leg strength left, and his best trait–directional kicking–just wasn’t as effective. Sad to say, but it may be time to hang it up.

GRADE: 70

LAWRENCE TYNES:

“Some of the” Tynes was streaky, as always. 27-32 on field goal attempts. He’ll make a big one, and miss a chip shot. Still, he’ll be here for awhile, after signing a long term deal.

GRADE: 71

DOMENIK HIXON:

Had some good games, and games where he did nothing. He’s a threat, and can be hard to cover. But, he to be more consistent.

GRADE: 78

  1. Steve B says:

    According to ProFootballFocus.com….

Tynes was rated as the 59th kicker out of 61 in 2009. So that means if there are 32 teams, and 32 kickers, Tynes was not worthy of being a backup.

In 2008 Feagles was rated as the 9th best punter in the league (out of 47)

In 2009 he was the 42 best kicker (out of 44), clearly he had a very very bad year, as did most Giants. Do I think he can return to his 2008 form? Yes, but do the Giants think that? IDK

Feagle is getting up there in age, so who knows what the Giants are going to do in the Special Teams department.

Note: if there is no CBA agreement, which doesnt look like it, 2010 will be an uncapped year, which means that teams can dump players with “big” contracts, and not take the cap hit (because there is no cap).
