Giants Thinking Offensive Line in the Draft?

O.K. let me get this out of the way right now. 1) I have no idea what the Giants are going to do. 2) this is PURE SPECULATION. This is me making inferences based on transcripts I’ve seen. I have not seen Reese talk, I do not have the context of these questions. This is me infering from what I’ve read.

On whether the draft will be heavy on defense after a lot of offensive picks last year: “We just try to pick the best players on the board at the time. if it ends up offense or defense, we just try to pick the best players. That’s important for us to pick the best player on the board and we’ll fill the holes where we need to fill them whenever we can fill them.”

You like for guys to be together for a while. For the last two or three years, we’ve had that same group,” Reese said Saturday in a brief session with reporters after his press conference here at the NFL scouting combing. “You get spoiled when you have a group together for three or four years. It may be a transition time for us.”

What does this mean to me. It could mean that Reese is talking about William Beatty starting at LT and moving Dihel to LG or RT, which is certainly possible.

But to me it means there WILL Be changes on the Offensive line and that the Giants, right now are going to draft the Best Player Available.

I think at 15 the best player available will be A) Rolando McClain/Joe Haden (Unlikely either of those are available), B) DE Derrick Morgan (Georgia Tech), C) Offensive Linmen (Anthony Davis, Bryan Bulaga, or Bruce Campbell are all possibilities). D) C.J. Spiller.

Earl Thomas is moving DOWN draft boards (not mine) because people think he is too small to play Safety and that he can’t play in the box in the N.F.L.

Brian Price is NOT (in my opinion) in the top 15 best players available.

Also Reese Said about the DT position:

On why they thought Canty would succeed in 4-3: “He’s a big-body guy that can definitely play the 3 technique in our defense and he can still play some of the defensive end stuff we do. We like interchangeable guys in our front and we thought he could play several positions in our front. But primarily, we think he’s going to be a 3 technique from us.”

On whether Canty is recovered from his injuries: “Yeah, he’s been in almost every day. He’s working hard trying to get back. He’s driven to come back and prove we made the right decision with him, so we expect big things from him.”

On the expectations for DT Jay Alford: “Jay is an inside pass rusher. He’s one of those guys that can penetrate up front. They say he’s on schedule to come back and we expect him to be 100 percent going into training camp. It’s unfortunate. He had a great summer last summer and we were expecting big things from him. And then, he had the injury. We expect him to come back. He’s a hard worker and if anybody can come back from that injury, it’s him.”

Again this is me inferring, but it sounds to me like the Giants feel more comftorable with the Defensive Tackle position than people think.

It also sounds to me (and I think the Giants do this anyway) the Giants will go Best Player Available regardless of position with two exceptions: 1 QB, 2 WR (too many young WR, and Dez Bryant has “work-ethic” concerns)

Which to me lends itself to Carlos Dunlap, Derrick Morgan, C.J. Spiller or an offensive linemen (most likely).

I also think the Giants feel comftorable selecting at 15

Reese is NOT Happy with S Michael Johnson

tremendous job for us. But the other guy – Michael Johnson – he has to play better. For a young guy you think is ascending, he has to play better and we expect him to play better.”

I think the Giants will end up going DE Derrick Morgan/Carlos Dunlap, C.J. Spiller, or an Offensive linemen in the draft.

I don’t think Earl Thomas or Brian Price will be the pick (although I like both, Price is fine value, not great value. I think Thomas CAN play in the box, a lot of people don’t think so).

Anyway I’m getting excited.

I’ll post the LB/S combine numbers tommorrow night or Wednesday.

michael johnson — is it possible for him to play better? the second worst safety IN THE LEAGUE.

he’s on the bottom of the bottom…. you cannot turn a guy like that around.

  2. jon says:

why no posts about the possibility of antonio cromartie?

he can help our week pass defense

  3. Curtis says:

What do you think about Sean Weatherspoon? I’ve been watching him in the combine and he looks great. He had 34 bench reps. He ran a 4.57 in the 40, twice. Great hip movement. Great communication skills and personality. He can also play the WILL and Mike. He can play the run as well as play in space. I haven’t seen too much film on him other than the senior bowl.(He played the MIKE) But if MCclain isn’t there and we don’t draft Dan Williams(Who I love at 15th pick)we should really consider this kid. Then we could get a safty in free agency(Rolle),draft a DT 2nd round.(Maybe Oddrick or Houston)Then a saftey in the third(Allen or Jones). The rest of the picks can fill any other holes. What do you think?

Michael johnson will be good when KP comes back

    • andrew ilnicki says:

michael johnson will be a good backup with KP coming back and the Giants signing Sharper.

      • Jeremy says:

I think Johnson played too many snaps and was asked to do several things he isn’t good at, like reacting to receiver routes. Maybe Fewell can coach him up.
