Rolle officially signs with the Giants

Antrel Rolle has officially signed with the Giants at 5 years and 37 million dollars  (less than the 8 million a year he was seeking) according to profootballtalk.com

Rolle was a high draft pick at Cornerback for the Cardinals, but has been playing safety the past (two? I think) years.

Rolle is a pretty good safety.

According to profootballfocus.com opposing Quarterbacks only had a 67.9 QB rating when they were throwing at Rolle, which was 13th best in the league for Safeties who took at least 75 percent of the plays on defense.

There are some definitive positives about Rolle.

First he has speed to burn (4.49 40 at the combine) for a safety…and he helps out in the Box.

Second, he’s still young at only 27 years old (he won’t turn 28 until late next season), and he hasn’t been playing safety for his whole career which means he still has a lot he can learn.

Third: Because the Giants have signed Rolle, and they expect Kenny Phillips to come back healthy and they also have Michael Johnson (terrible last year, was fine the two years before that) they do nto have to feel forced to select a Safety in the first two rounds of the draft.

Fourth: the Giants are showing that despite some busts last year they are not afraid to get back in the Free Agency market for more high profile players…which is a good sign if a salary cap goes away (because you know Dallas and Washington will spend the money).

Fifth:  now they can go best player in the draft in the first two rounds, which is nice.

It’s my personal believe that you FILL NEEDS In Free Agency and Draft the Best Player Available in the draft.

There is no point in drafting a player who fills a need (but won’t do anything at the N.F.L.) level instead of a player you think will play well in the N.F.L. even if he doesn’t fit an immediate need.

Now, I’ve said this more than once, but that to me one of the most underrated players in the league is Oshimo Atogwe who plays on St. Louis, who received just a low tender from the Rams and probably could have been had. I like him, but I like Rolle too.

I think a Phillips/Rolle Safety combination can be one that you can get excited about…this also moves Aaron Ross back to corner giving the Giants three at least starter-material CB with Webster, Ross, and Thomas.

So in conclusion, to me, you can’t complain. The Giants are showing us that they are not willing to accept what happened last year, that they recognize Safety is a major need, and that they can play in the Big Boys Court for Free Agent players if the Salary Cap Does Go Away.

Now, let’s Sign MLB Larry Foote, so we can have all our needs taken care of and can focus on getting quality players in the draft.

Y larry foote? We would have just kept pierce. I kno foot will only b ther so we don’t throw the rookie in but it makes more sense to not cut pierce in that scenario being that he was our leader.

I think he can be a real shutdown saftey and given a little passrush can help him with that. I dont think they should sign foote, kinda old not as mobile, they should just sign dansby and get it over with, Uncapped year get the most we can get

right after seasons end I was thinking Atogwe would be a steal from the Rams — and 3rd round is not a hefty price for a good safety. however, I’m glad they chose Rolle for some cash and now the draft is wide open for the Giants…. of course unless they make some more moves over the next month which is possible
