Matt Mosley’s Giants Chat Transcript:

Tuesday Matt Mosley of ESPN chatted about the NFC East.  Here are the Giants related posts.

Did the Giants overpay for Rolle? Or, was it too big of a need given how poor their safeties played and the questions around Philips’ return?

Thanks for hanging around. Jake, they most certainly overpaid. But they felt like they needed to blow Rolle out of the water to land him. Oh, and I don’t believe for a second that the Cards were offering something in that neighborhood.

What do you suppose the Giants plans concerning linebacker are moving forward? Anyone in FA or on the trading block they may be interested in or are they hoping to find starters in the draft? Thanks!

I think they’d love to land a linebacker like Spikes in the draft. But some of that help will have to come from within. It’s time for Sintim to take the next step and become more consistent. And we’ll see what Goff can become.

Matt, love the blog…two quick draft questions: does Miami signing Dansby make it more likely that McClain falls to the giants (especially with him not participating at the combine), and if not, do you think Reese would move up a few spots to take him; there is a huuuuge need at MLB, and not a whole lot of FA help available

I don’t think McClain gets to the Giants. He’s too good a player. And no, I don’t think Reese will move up from 15. There’s plenty of talent for the Giants to get a good player there.

So if the giants can’t get McClain in the draft, do you think reach for Spikes at 15, trade down, take an OL if there’s good value, or do something completely different?

It’s a deep draft, Chris. It just depends on where Spikes is on their board. Jerry Reese isn’t going to start reaching for certain positions. If one of those big-time offensive tackles starts slipping, Reese will be opportunistic.

I know that the giants dont have a need at RB but the run game went from first in the league to dismlal. Any chance they look at one of these veteran guys?

Well, you’ll have Brown returning from an injury and Bradshaw should be in much better shape. I don’t think the Giants are desperate for a veteran back.

Do you think that with the addition of Rolle, the Giants secondary can go from worst to first in the league? Especially with Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross in the mix? (as long as they’re healthy)

Lots of “ifs” involved in the Giants’ worst to first scenario. Let’s not act like Rolle was some type of star in this league. And that’s a really bad injury that Phillips is returning from. Improved? You bet. Best? Not ready to go there.

what nfc east team has the best draft this year?

Give me Reese and the Giants.

Looking into the future as far as head coach for the Giants. Is this Coughlin’s last year?? And if so, any truth to Cowher becoming the next Head Coach??

It’s impossible for me to answer that. If the Giants go 8-8, it could certainly be Coughlin’s last season. If they return to form, then he’ll keep rolling. And that Cowher stuff was just Bus Bettis grabbing a little attention. I don’t think Cowher would ever openly covet another man’s job. He has better form than that.

Matt, do you think Ramses sees the field this year? Also do you think that Hakeem Nicks is ready to become a consistent threat for Eli?

I think Nicks is already a consistent threat. He’s on his way to becoming a Pro Bowler — along with Steve Smith. Barden HAS to learn how to improve on special teams. It’s as simple as that, Joe.

Quick Q, do the Giants return to the playoffs this year, and is Eli going to another Pro Bowl?

Last year you said Eli was a Top 5 qb. What is he this year?

Top 10

Matt what are you hearing about Phillips return from that knee injury? Bone on bone sounds really bad

I’ve been told by Reese that he’s progressing really, really well. But the Giants are operating as if he’ll have a slow re-entry. And I think that’s smart. OK, you guys have been awesome. Let’s top the 1,000-question mark next week. BTW, thanks for your patience as I was running a couple minutes behind today. You guys have been great. Wait, let’s answer one or two more.
