Thinking Out Loud
I’ve been thinking draft lately. And, we’ve seemed to agree on the three MAJOR needs: Linebacker, defensive and offensive line. And we seem to agree that those will be addressed in the first three picks. But, what happens after? Another corner? Maybe a punter?
The good thing about this team is that needs are very easily identified. After that, it’s a bit tough. Do you use some of those later picks to trade up for a guy you really like? Or just use those picks on special teams fodder?
I’d lean towards trading those picks. Maybe you can trade up into the top 10, to select someone like Jason Pierre Paul, or even Russell Okung, if he’s still there. Or, in the second and third rounds, there maybe a guy you like, and you trade up to get him.
The Giants can afford to be flexible, and I think they should take advantage of that. Your thoughts?

Trade down for extra picks next year

how about they seriously consider using jacobs as a FB and draft another RB that can compete with Danny Ware and Andre Brown, especially if the Giants continue to rely on passing to their fullbacks, ehem.
The Giants only have one fullback as it is, and Jacobs can block and frankly is even bigger than Leonard Weaver who did a hell of a job in the dual role in Philly last year.
Expand our horizons I say… return to the smash mouth magic and look for the best way to utilize all our players

Trade the extra picks. We have a young enough team as it is. No need to bring 8-10 rookies to camp this year.

Well LB is definitely the number 1 need.
OL we possibly need a tackle, but not necessarily, there are options. It all depends on health. They could move Diehl around either LG or RT, LG would probably be better, because Seubert is getting long in the tooth. And we still do have McKenzie at RT, but we do need a long term answer. Giants definitely need to have a backup center, because they are lacking a true center, and Ohara is like 33.
DT is a need, but there are players there, Coefield, Canty and hopefully a healthy Alford. So they could use 1 more to that rotation.
In short, the only starter they need is MLB. All the others can be there for depth and rotation players.

That holiday kid out of LSU intrigues me a lot. He has tremendous ability, He’s a return man and can catch out of the backfield. Similar to Sproles, what he would bring to our offense would be nice. Could be an good 4th or 5th round pick.

I completely agree with trading picks, cutting down the roster was hard enough last year, and this year we may be forced to carry 2 kickers and perhaps 3 QBs if they want to keep Bomar on the roster, I think there will only be room for 4 roster spots between picks and undrafted free agents when all is said and done.

I think we should stay put at 15 and draft Sean Weatherspoon, hes versitle, fast and can play either weakside or middle line backer. Then trade up in the second round, still some quality players around in the top of the second round and we might be able to find a steal of a DE or Oline

It’s like they’ve been trying to replace Tynes ever since that NFC championship game. I say draft a kicker!

I think the G-men will draft the best value player at 15. I think we shouldn’t be overlooking the fact that the we still might have a need at sefety, or corner. Pillips may not recover as well as we would like, Ross is always hurt and Rolle is not that good, really. We might need a playmaker att safety… just a thought. With the 15th overall the New York Giants select Taylor Mays, Safety, USC.

No way the giants didnt go out and spend 37 million dollars on a saftey to draft another one in the first round, they may draft a saftey in the later rounds but def not first or second, not when they have such a glaring need at linebacker

also one thing I found was on the nfl.com video best offseason moves they say that put Rolle up as one of the best pickups of the offseason, Ahead of Peppers and Dansby

A little Shawn Andrews anyone?
The Eagles just released the former All-Pro guard, saying that they are moving in a different direction. I know, he has had injury problems over the past few years, and back injuries are always a cause for concern with OL. I also know that he is a bit of a handful, suffering from supposed “depression” last season that kept him out of camp, and beginning an underground (as it should remain) hip-hop career last season, among other things. BUT, he is a former-first round pick in 2004 and proved his talent to be deserving of such a high choice when he has not been injured. He has had sometime to get healthy only playing 2 games last season, and he is only 27 so there should still be a fair amount of football in front of him. Also, Reese has been known to be adept at handling character issue guys, so there is no reason he couldn’t work with Shawn as well. He could be an immediate upgrade to our LG position, and address one of our offseason concerns in terms of OL talent and depth. I’m not totally in love with the idea, but it is worth considering. What do you guys think?

Pete S. I was pondering the same thing the moment it happened.
I’m in favor of it if it makes monetary sense.
