Jerry Reese on Sirius NFL Radio’s Movin’ The Chains:

“Well, you know, if you guys can remember, when I first got hired as GM, Michael Strahan came in and said ‘You know what? I’m not playing,’” Reese said. “So I’ve been through that from the very beginning. I call it ‘offseason chatter.’ Almost every team there’s one or two players you hear some chatter in that respect.

“Osi and I had some good conversations. I expect Osi to be back and be a huge part of what we’re doing.”

Reese, during the brief interview, also addressed several other topics:

• Remember last offseason when everyone thought the Giants were desperate for a receiver, but Reese kept insisting he had enough good receivers on his roster already? Well, despite what appears to be a gaping hole at middle linebacker, he’s starting to say the same things about that position too – – a possible indication that the solution to the Giants’ linebacking problems may come from within.

“Well, I think there’s good players in the draft at that position, but we think we have some players on our team,” Reese said. “Last year everybody said ‘You need receivers, you need receivers …’ I said ‘We have some young receivers, let’s see what they can do.’ (At linebacker) we have Gerris Wilkinson, Clint Sintim, Jon Goff, Bryan Kehl. We have some guys on the roster right now we hope will step up. But we’ll continue to look for that position in free agency and the draft.”

• Jy Bond, the punter the Giants signed last week kicked with both legs during his tryout for the Giants. “It was true,” Reese said. “First time I’ve ever seen it. I thought he was just messing around. I said ‘Is this guy kidding?’ He kicks with his left foot on the pooch punts and he kicks with his right foot when he spirals the thing. He’s different, but he’s got a powerful leg. We’ll see what he can do.”

• Reese said S Kenny Phillips, who is still rehabbing from knee surgery, is “close” to a return to the field. “He feels like he can start running right now,” Reese said. “But we’re taking him slow. We don’t want him to have any setbacks. But he looks good.”

• Reese said it’s “crucial” that last year’s free agents – – LB Michael Boley, DT Chris Canty and DT Rocky Bernard – – step up and play much better in 2010. “We went out and spent a lot of money in free agency and we thought we had some good players. Most of them are healthy (now). Michael Boley had two surgeries during the season. Canty had a surgery. Rocky Bernard had a torn labrum. We had a bunch of injured guys last year, so hopefully they’ll be healthy and ready to go. We expect them to be that way so we can get back on track.”

• Reese again said that he expects T William Beatty to compete for a starting job, though he did not say on which side (at the combine he indicated he’d compete with David Diehl on the left). “Well you know what? He played a couple of games for us and he really showed us some things we didn’t expect,” Reese said. “We really thought he’d be a redshirt guy, basically have a year to get in the weight room and do some things for us in that respect. But we had to throw him in the fire a couple of times and he stepped right in and did some nice things for us. We expect him to challenge for one of the spots there.”

If McClain is there at 15 grab him. If not grab the best player available. Who knows maybe Goff/Kehl/Sintim can become a decent starting lineup. But if JR thinks we can grab a better player there than im all for it.

SEAN WEATHERSPOON should be our 1st step….getting someone in the 3rd or 4th at olb should be next boley played well but if he goes down again we have noone. Hope sintim becomes the player he was in colledge.

The thing about the recievers from last year and our lb situation this year was that smith and hixon both contributed very well the year before. Goff was ok but other than him kehl and wilkinson have shown nothing. Its obvious we need a 1st round talent in the group
