Lots of Draft Talk

First up is the continuation of the giantsgab.com mock draft

Rams Bradford

Lions-Suh

Bucaneers-McCoy

Redskins-Clausen

Chiefs-Berry

Seahawks-Okung

Now onto the Cleveland Browns.

There are a lot of choices for the Browns becuase I have NO IDEA what they will do.

Holmgreen’s running the show (thankfully becuase last year they gave the #5 overall pick for the 17th pick, a box of chocolates, and Brett Ratliff) so who knows what they will do. Word is they are thinking secondary, but most stuff out here is smoke screen (so Joe Haden, Earl Thomas). I do think Eric Berry will go here in a second if he falls this far.

I’ve thought, and this is for awhile now that the Browns would do well to add Rolando McClain, but who knows.

All right, draft is fast-approaching. Here are some things about the Draft I wanted to share.

First, be mindful of Sean Weatherspoon. I’ve seen him SHOOTING up Boards…in fact I’ve seen two mock drafts today (out of the three I looked at) that have him going to the Giants.

And for those of you willing to read me tooting my own horn.

There were two players I targeted that I loved that most people weren’t (1st round) high on at the start of the draft process.

Earl Thomas, and Kyle Wilson

Well look around…Earl Thomas was just named Mike Mayock’s NUMBER ONE Safety prospect (yes, that means over Eric Berry), and 7th overall best prospect in the entire draft and I”v eseen Kyle Wilson over take Joe Haden in a few spots as the #1 CB in this year’s draft. And he’s #2 CB all over now. Unfortuantely, it seems though neither player will make it to the Giants (Thomas round 1, Wilson round two). I think Denver, Jacksonviile, Cleveland (especially if Berry is gone)

Being that I”m a Best Player Available kind of person I don’t think Thomas will be available at 15th overall, and he’s a player I’m not opposed to taking even with Antrel Rolle. Thomas can help in at CB or Safety and it’s not like Kenny Phillips is a 100 percent guranteed to return, it seems people are backing off him a bit.

on the other hand, a player I don’t love…Trent Williams (I think he’s fine, but not spectacular. I actually prefer Bruce Campbell over Williams) is starting to get a lot of love.

In a poll taken by a guy who wirtes for CBS (lost the name) 2 people high up in the drafting world (GMs) have Trent Williams as the #1 overall tackle.

Let’s take a look at who people think will end up with the Giants.

Walterfootball.com (a site I respect) has the Giants selecting Sean Weatherspoon OVER Rolando McClain, which I don’t think will happen.

But he’s getting some love.

Pat Kirwan of NFL.com

Also has Weatherspoon mocked to the Giants (but not over McClain)

15. New York Giants
Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri

Some think I have Weatherspoon too high, but I had one coach tell me on Sunday he’s not high enough. We’ll see what the truth is in a month. For now, after watching his game tapes and practices, I will tell you that this versatile athlete can play any of the linebacker spots — and the Giants have multiple openings. A 239-pound guy that is very smart, runs a 4.6 40, had over 400 tackles in his college career and squats 770. (Previous pick: Weatherspoon)

He’s climbing becuase people now think he can play an effective MLB and we already know he will most likely make a good WLB or OLB. Becuase of his production, good measurables, and versatility he’s climbing.

He might be the Jerod Mayo of a few years ago…no one considered him the top LB prospect, but draft day he snuck into the top 10 when the Patriots selected him very much for the same reasons people like Weatherspoon.

Smart, versatile, productive in college.

Sean Weatherspoon 15th overall.

Well one thing is for sure. Things sure have changed greatly since awhile ago.

At the beginning of this process (right after College Football season ended) the Giants were pretty heavy on Brian Price, Taylor Mays and Earl Thomas.

Now, it’s pretty much a Sean Weatherspoon, Rolando McClain, and Derrick Morgan show.

Of the three Derrick Morgan provides the best value in terms of both position and overall rankings.

Rolando McClain is second, although his stock is dropping a little bit as people continue to question whether or not he can make it inside becuase of his size (something I’m not concerned about to be honest)

and Sean Weatherspoon is the third most value.

I’ve said since the beginning that I’m also FOR drafting C.J. Spiller at 15th overall. He’s dynamic and he’s solve three problems at once. First he’d make the Oline look better with how fast he’s get up to the line, second he’d help out with the catching the ball out of the backfield, and thirdly he’d help in both punt and kick return duties. The game is changing.

People love to hate on Reggie Bush, but he’s played in 52 career games and he has 32 career touchdowns (not counting KR if he has any). And while that’s not enough for a second overall pick…what team wouldn’t take that.

Spiller at 15 would provide the Giants that kind of ability for a 10th of the cost it took to get Reggie Bush.

I’m not saying Spiller should be the #1 target, but I am saying he should be a very plausible and realistic target.

I’m coming out with my big board soon too…so you guys can agree or disagree with me on that then.

I like Mayock, but no way is Thomas better than Berry. I think Thomas will be a good player, but Berry has the chance to be great. Big difference. Saw somewhere that Mays was ranked over Thomas (think it was Draft Countdown).

  2. alex says:

Who has ?z that mclain can’t play midle? What about his size? And no way we take spoon over mclain if both are available. Anyone think well move up to make sure we get the best linebacker in the draft

  3. Steve B. says:

McClain is hands down my pick, and I’ve read that the Giants are high on him, even knowing he has Crohns disease and all.

Love what McClain brings, smart, powerful, playmaker, instinctive, etc…

My next option would be Brian Price, but for some reason he has been falling pretty far, almost to the 2nd round due to the talent at the DT position, and the fact that he didnt run a great 40.

UCLA has their pro day on tuesday i believe, so i will be intresting to see if he runs a better 40. If not, I would have no problems taken him in the 2nd round. I could see him falling, last year people said that Beatty (0r sintim) was a 1st round pick who fell to the 2nd.

Hell Justin Tuck was rated as a 1st round player, and we got him in the 3rd round. You never know

  4. Michael S says:

Didn’t Rolando say he would prefer playing in a 3-4 defense?
How bout this? Bigggg reach. .0093% of happening- What are the chances that JR picks up Kirk Morrison by giving a 3rd round pick, then we give the bucs our 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 3rd of next years for there 3rd overall pick and grab McCoy. Then MLB is filled, DT is filled and you grab a safety in the 2nd round.
I would give all these picks away because we already have a bunch of depth at our positions and as JR says, the players need 3 years to develop which means were still waiting. By doing that, we fill all the MAJOR needs. As far as o-line is concerned, we could groom an undrafted one for the future. In the mean while, slide diehl to guard, plug Beatty to LT, and keep mckenzie at RT. He was rated one of the best tackles this year just so you know. If he gets injured, move diehl to RT and bring seubert back to LG.

  5. Dan says:

I would be thrilled if they took Weatherspoon. I love McClain, but based on all his games I’ve seen (not highlights) I really do not believe he is a 3-down linebacker in a 43 system. He would be solid against the run, but he just doesn’t move his hips well in coverage. Weatherspoon I think can play every down at either the Will or the Mike. McClain will be awesome in a 34, but I just don’t see the range for the 43 mike.

  6. Steve B. says:

I would like to see a profile on Anthony Dixon (RB). I have seen a couple mock drafts where they have the giants taking him in the fourth round (i believe 4th).

Dont know much about him, but with the question mark at our #3 RB, who knows if the Giants will draft a RB this year.

Brown is coming back from a devastating injury, and who knows if Danny Ware is the answer.

  7. Sam W says:

I think Weatherspoon is the man for the GIants in the first round, no one seems to compare him to Mayo but I believe they have the exact same scouting reports and draft rise. If not I believe we must go with spiller in the first, a playmaker who will change our offense. I am seriously interested in Maurkice Pouncey in the 2nd round so I was wondering if you could get a profile of him.
