Safety Deon Grant Visiting Giants

Mike Garafolo is reporting that former Seahawks safety Deon Grant is visiting the Giants today. The 31 year old safety was released from the Seahawks not because of performance, but because he was owed $17 million over the next 3 seasons. Seattle doesn’t want to pay that.

Grant’s a very good cover safety, who’s always making plays. He’s had at least two interceptions every year of his career, and is always around 60-70 tackles. It’s clear why the Giants are bringing him in: Kenny Phillips. As Jerry Reese said:

I don’t think you can put all your eggs in Kenny’s basket right now because that’s a tough injury to come back from, so we’ll try to be prepared if he doesn’t come back 100 percent.”

This is insurance for Phillips. If Phillips is healthy, Grant is a really good backup. If he’s not, Grant’s  the starter, and he’s been a pretty good one at that. This is a great pick-up for the Giants if it goes through.
