“I Do Have Some Confidence In Guys On The Roster Who Haven’t Played A Lot.”

The above quote is from GM Jerry Reese, speaking at the pre-draft presser (transcript is not available yet. We’ll pass it along when it is.) In true Reese fashion, he didn’t say much of note. But, the quote above, and a quote I will share a bit later, were a little revealing.

The “guys who haven’t played a lot” are Gerris Wilkinson, Bryan Kehl and Jon Goff. They are all internal candidates to take over for Antonio Pierce. This, of course, could just be some pre-draft posturing, trying to scare some teams off. I still believe the Giants are very much interested in Rolando McClain, and will run up to the podium if he’s there at 15. But, if Reese does have confidence in one of these three guys to win the job, they won’t draft McClain, and they’ll draft a middle linebacker in the middle rounds. I don’t agree with that strategy. Do you think anyone from the Goff, Wilkinson, Kehl group will emerge as the starter?

The other quote of interest was about LB Clint Sintim–the expected starter at strongside linebacker.

“If you’re picked in the second round up here, we expect you to play. The first three picks, you always expect those guys to contribute right away,” Reese said. “He didn’t play a lot last year. He flashed a little bit in a couple of games but we expect him to really come along with some guys who have been here a little bit longer than him (Gerris Wilkinson, Bryan Kehl and Jonathan Goff). We expect those guys to show us what they have. Hopefully, they will do that.”

Reese has always been confident in his players, especially the ones he drafted. He drafted all of those guys, with Wilkinson being an exception. I, like Reese, expect Sintim to have a major impact from the strongside position. He has tremendous blitzing ability, and they can even use him as a down lineman on some occasions. But, again, he hasn’t proven anything, and like the other guys, he will need to. We’ll see what happens.
