So, the Giants final pick was Matt Dodge, a punter from East Carolina. Don’t know much about him, to be honest. Here’s a scouting report from CBS.
Has fair leg strength, but many of his 50-yard kicks were aided by friendly bounces. Get-off times fluctuated from 1.1 to 1.4 seconds depending on whether he hesitates or takes a small step before starting his typical two-step delivery.
Hangtime is a major concern and too many of his kicks don’t spiral, turn over and stay in the air for only 3.4-3.7 seconds. Used rugby punts to place punts inside the 20-yard line and was too inconsistent keeping punts out of the end zone when using normal delivery.
A bit below-average height and leg extension for the position. Made four tackles on punt returns in 2009 and has a relatively stout build. Willing to throw his body into the play. Kickoffs lack lift to be effective at the next level.
It’s clear that the Giants are grooming him to be the punter after Feagles. I had actually mocked this, but I had selected Zoltan Mesko, who went in the fifth round to the Patriots. It looks like Dodge is a bit of a project, but they needed someone who can step in after Feagles. Give him a year under Feagles, and Dodge could be good. He’s a practice squad player, for now. But he’s the future. He’ll compete with Jy Bond, but they wouldn’t draft Dodge if they didn’t think he had the potential. We shall see.
Update: 4:13 EST: The beat writers are reporting that Jeff Feagles is not sure he can go this year, and will make up his mind next week about retirement. And that’s why Dodge was drafted. Dodge may be the present, not the future.
