“Breakout Player” LB Clint Sintim

takenf rom:

The next player up in my “breakout player” series is linebacker Clint Sintim.

Clint Sintim is a big strong linebacker who will should start at the outside linebacker spot for the New York Giants this upcoming season.

I’ve proposed a few times that I think Clint Sintim could play inside, but I do not believe that the Giants are considering that option at all, so we’ll assume he’ll remain on the outside.

What did Clint Sintim show us last year? Well, not much. He fought through some nagging injuries while adjusting to a new role (he played more 3-4 in college) as a strongside linebacker in a 4-3 in the N.F.L.

Let’s look at Sintim’s college career.

Sintim played at the university of Virigina where he amassed 246 tackles in a four year career. More impressively he had 26 sacks throughout the course of his college career, and 19 in his final two seasons.

Sintim Had a lot of college experience starting in 48 games. I know that Fuchs last year thougth Sintim was a viable option for the 1st round draft selection (thankfully they went with Hakeem Nicks and still got Sintim in the second round).

Sintim is a big linebacker at 6’3 and 256 pounds.

At the combine he ran a 4.82 40 (would not be anywhere near the top 10 this year for linebackers).

Sintim has the reputation of a hard worker and was a productive college player.

If you scour through scouting reports from Sintim before last season you would see that there are questions about whether or not Clint Sintim can play in space (I’ll say this again the Giants hve a the right kind of personnel to run the 3-4, especially with Canty and Joseph now on the line. Joseph can play nose, canty can play on the outside end and Tuck could play the other. Jonathan Goff might be best suited for a 3-4 linebacker and Sintin/Kiwanuaka can play outisde)…

People wonder this because he did not have a ton of responsibilitis in pass coverage in college.

But here’s what one of my favorite sites said about Sintim has a prospect

Strengths: Nice height, size, and build … Supreme versatility; Can play 4-3 SAM, 3-4 OLB … Do-it-all linebacker in the appropriate schemes … Athletic enough to be a consistent force in the pass rush … Takes appropriate angles to ball-carriers … Excellent strength … Able to shake offensive linemen and make the tackle … Highly productive and consistent playmaker even with the loss of Chris Long … Will be an outstanding leader.

Weaknesses: Isn’t able to sink his hips and play the Tampa 2 defense … Has only two pass rush moves: rip and swim … Isn’t always as tough in the run game defense as he should be … Should be forcing more fumbles.

Summary: You have to love Sintim’s build. He can play a lot of positions and he has a good feel for the game who gives it his all … Underrated propspect who could shock many people and go in the top 20 picks.

Player Comparison: Julian Peterson. Both players can play the same positions and are athletic enough to be consistent pass rushers.

Let’s look at what Sintim did in the N.F.L.

Sintim played in 11 games (no starts) and had 20 tackles and a sack (althoguh the sack was a cheapy).  Sintim’s best game was probably vs Dallas where he had 3 tackles and a sack.

The Biggest question about Sintim is can he play in space?

Well in very limited time: says that Clint Sintim had a pass coverage rating of .3 for the 11 games on the season. 0.0 is average.

If Clint Sintim can be average in coverage I think the Giants will be very happy.

His upside as a run defender and pass rusher from the SAM position in the N.F.L. is very good.

He’s also a hard worker and says the right things.

I posted an interview with him from awhile back where he said things like this: (not with me but with Patricia Traina

had flashes, but by no means was I the player that I wanted to be,” Sintim said. “There’s a lot of factors that contributed to that, but almost all of those factors are me. So I really just want to recycle myself and re-evaluate what got me here and why I was the player I was in college and try to be that player on this next level.”

“It’s going to be an important year. I’m not a rookie anymore,” Sintim said. “All that stuff that ‘well, he’s just a rookie and he can make that mistake, he’s a young player’ all those excuses may not fly.

I’m expected to be a better player, to be smarter about the game. I haven’t though about it as pressure, I’ve just thought about it as a great opportunity.”

I want to be a dominant player in this league,” Sintim said. “It starts not only in weight room, which we’re doing now, but in the classroom.

“That’s why Antonio (Pierce) was in the league so long. He knew what he was doing, he was always in the classroom. I’m just trying to model myself after guys like him and Danny (Clark). Even though they’re not here they’re still guys that really influenced me.”

He has the right attitude. He had the right production in college, he has the right work ethic (reportedly), and he has the high hopes of every Giants fan that they have finally found an impact outside linebacker.

Let’s hope Clint Sintim starts to come into his ownt his year.

Clint Sintim breakout candidate #4 for the New York Giants in 2010.

What do you guys think of Clint Sintim’s potential for 2010?

Think Sintim will be good at SAM spot this year. Not great, because SAM position is not really the glory position of the 3 LB spots. Boley will probably have the best year at of all LB’s.

I Highly doubt the Giants would switch to the 3-4, because that system is based on your LB’s being the strength of the team, and many would argue that the LB’s on the defense of the Giants are probably the weakest area, when considering the DL & secondary.

I think the Defense this year will be more closely to the Defense in 07 & 08. Not the tampa 2, not 34, but an attacking squad.

    • Jason C. says:

I think they will show some Tampa 2 looks, but yeah for the most part don’t expect too much of a difference with the defensive gameplanning. I’m hoping they keep looking into that 5-1-5 formation, it’s quite intriguing. (Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Sintim, and JPP coming at the QB at the same time, someone’s gonna get to him fast, let’s just hope our guys can cover long enough.)

How the Giants LBs shape up in prep for the season will be perhaps the most interesting segment of Pre-season camp & games.
I light candles hoping that Sintim makes a Big Impact with our D this season and that a dark horse emerges for the middle LB position. I hope that Sintim is able to do well early & step up with Leadership on the D, if our old tired veterans are still asleep and going thru the motions. It would be great to see some young players & rookie get a chance and make the old FARTs sit and watch how it should be done. Pride, Hustle and Enthusiasm in the New Stadium would go a long way toward returning Giant Pride.
I Believe Giant fans are OK w a few rookie mistakes and growing pains mixed in w a D that has enthusiasm & Pride.

  2. Jeremy says:

I believe the Giants will almost always Rush 5 guys at a time. I see Sintim having 6+ sacks strictly from the Sam position.

    • Steve B. says:

You know, that reminds me of the so called 5-1-5 That we heard about last training camp, that rarely surfaced.

To think with our D-line this year and our secondary buffed up, that would really be an effective system.

      Just to reiterate, 5 DL, 1 LB, 5 DB’s

  3. Dave says:

we have to hope that simtim breaks out because we need all the LB help we can get

  4. kman says:

at least we drafted him and not cushing, just busted for steroids!!

  5. mims says:

think We are only seeing the beginning of his potential and will be more agressive in both his play and his presense as a leader..he has a good head on his shoulders. and a great attitude

  6. Shai says:

Bill S. – didnt the Giants fire you already, you can stop lighting candles.

The linebacker corp is this year’s receiver group from last year. Except at least Steve Smith was a pretty big certainty. Is Boley a certainty? I dont think so, but I do think he’ll have a pretty good year.
