Giants Running Out Of Jersey Numbers

“The Giants have a long, illustrious history similar to that of their former co-tenants, the Yankees.

Both teams have retired the numbers of many of their legendary ex-players. In baseball, that is not really a problem. In football, where you may have as many as 80 players active (the Giants have 87 right now), the numbers begin to run out.

The Giants are close to having that happen. With 80 players under contract and eleven numbers retired, only nine numbers between 1-99 are not being used.

Throw in Michael Strahan’s #92, which is off-limits, and you have only eight unused numbers.

One number that should also be off-limits is Harry Carson’s #53. The Giants, for some reason have not gotten around to immortalizing their great Hall-of-Fame MLB.

Rookie LB Phillip Dillard will be wearing it this season. Bryan Kehl, who wore the number the past two seasons, has switched to #55, recently made available when the Giants chose to part ways with Danny Clark.
Recently signed rookie free agents Micah Johnson and Lee Campbell are wearing numbers 45 and 46 respectively. The Giants traditionally do not give linebackers numbers in the 40’s.
Several numbers are being used twice. This, of course will all work itself out once the team pares down its roster as the summer unfolds.”
