Is Dallas Overated?

Here’s maybe the most important piece of information from last year’s Dallas Cowboys team. That you won’t see mentioned anywhere else.

I”m going to select four weeks at random to demonstrate my point.

First Dallas INJURED Reserve last year:

LB Brandon Williams

LB Stephen Hodge

(Two players who might not even have played much)

New York Giants Injured reserve last year.¬† (that I can remember: Giants don’t have it listed, Cowboys did)

DT Jay Alford, RB Andre Brown, LB Antonio Pierce, S Kenny Phillips, TE Darcy Johnson

(the blocking TE, pass rushing DT, starting LB, potentially impact safety, Pierce)

Week 17 injury report:

Marc Colombo (out)

Patrick Watkins (out)

Miles Austin

Terrance Newman

Gerald Sensabaugh

All probable.

Week 13

Marc Colombo and Ken Hamlin out

Week 7 (Nobody out)

Week 3

Marion Barber-limited in practice

Now the same weeks for the New York Giants

Week 17

Out-Chris Canty

Kareem McKenzie

Corey Webster

Brandon Jacobs

Aaron Ross

All out.

Questionable:

Suebert

Tuck

Mario Manningham

Ahmahd Bradshaw

Week 13

(Besides those on IR)

Danny Ware OUT

Questionable: Michael Johnson, Ahmahd Bradshaw, Travis Beckum

Week 7

(Besides those on IR)

OUT-Michael Boley

Chris Canty

Aaron Ross

QUEST-Kareem McKenzie

WEEK 3

OUT:

Chris Canty

Hakeem Nicks

Kenny Phillips (then IR)

Aaron Ross

Clint Sintim

Danny Ware
QUESTIONABLE:

Kevin Dockery

Domenik Hixon

Justin Tuck

Adam Koets (who cares?)

What does this say?

To me this says that the Dallas Cowboy were EXTREMELY lucky with injuries last year. It’s rare in a sport like football that you don’t have to IR at least one talented player in a year.

Sure the Cowboys had some nagging injuries,

but here are a list of Giants without known nagging injuries last year: David Diehl, Ohara, Chris Snee, Steve Smith, Terrell Thomas, Michael Johnson (unless sucking is an injury) Feagles, Tyne, Dave Tollefson, C.C. Brown, Aaron Rouse. Corey Webster? I can’t remember any reported injuries.
Can anyone else think of a player who played healthy for the season? Not Eli Manning (foot) not Jacobs or Bradshaw, not Nicks (missed games) or Hixon, or Manningham (missed games). Not Tuck, or Umeinyora, Coefield or Robbins, not Bernard, not Kevin Boss

Through all of their luck the Dallas Cowboys went 11-5 with loses to the Giants (twice), Denver, Green Bay and San Diego.

Sure, the Cowboys were good last year, but I can’t believe how little people mention how completely healthy the Cowboys were last year.

Here’s what I know about Dallas: Last year they had an awful draft in my mind that will yield no impact players. They had no significant injuries (DeMarcus Ware had what LOOKED like a bad injury) to anyone important on their team and they had a pretty good defense.

They were the polar opposite of the Giants on defense last year, where they were 20th against the pass in yards per game but second overall in points (the stat that actually matters). Whereas the Giants had 14th vs the passing yards, but 30th (yuck!) in points.

I’m not saying that the Giants deserve to be considered the better team than the Dallas Cowboys, what am I saying is that last year Dallas had one of the healthiest teams in the league and they still managed to go 11-5.

The Dallas Cowboys had a draft last year that will not provide any impact players where almost every other team in the league (except for the Redskins who never have any draft picks) will have second year players looking to make an impact.

The Cowboys also still have WADE PHILLIPS as their coach.

I still have absolutely no faith in Wade Phillips.

To me, the Cowboys are getting overrated.

I just looked online at N.F.L.com and saw them ranked as the 4th best team before the pre-season in the league. 4th best? What did they do to jump over New Orleans, Minnesota, Indy, San Diego and others? Walterfootball.com has them ranked as the 3rd best team in the league.

3rd Best team?

What did they add in the off-season?

They had a solid draft with Bryant and Sean Lee (although I think he’s a little overrated) and others, but 2009’s draft will do nothing for the Cowboys, while I think other teams have players who might make an impact.

I also know that Flozell Adams was old and a cheater and a liability vs the pass at times, but he was a dominating run blocker (6th best according to profootballfocus.com) and Doug Free is a big question mark at LT. On top of that the other four Cowboys offensive linemen are 31 or older (and if anyone was watching the Giants OL age out of nowhere last year) which could prove to be a problem.

Now, I’m not just knocking the Cowboys because they do have some positives, but this time last year everyone was talking about the Eagles has being one of the five best teams in the league and I wrote an article “Da Eagles are OVERrated” where I said that this is a team that has serious defensive deficiencies¬† no one is talking about and that they will not be as good as people think they will be.¬† And I was right. The defense wasn’t the same without Jim Johnson and Brian Dawkins.

But I was also wrong about the Giants last year even after week 5 when I was basically looking at the playoff schedule the Giants would have to go through, but we’ll see this year.

I think the Giants, as of now are underrated. People are down on the G-men, but a lot of analysts are not factoring in injuries enough.

People always talk about how the N.F.L. is a game of attrition, but don’t include that in their analysis of what did happen.

The Cowboys have a very high potential on offense, and they have key pieces on defense. Improving Cornerbacks, and two great pass rushers (DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff), but they also have some flaws I think that are being overlooked the first is they were one of, if not THE Healthiest team in the league last season and I can’t imagine they will have that same fortune this year.

What do you guys think about Dem Cowboys this season?

Although I still despise the ‘boys, at least the thugs are gone and they have some nice guys (Romo, who’s always smiling; and Wade Phillips, poor soul). I’ll be hating the ‘skins more now since they have McNabb, who I’ve never liked. Can’t hate on the Eagles as much now either since McNabb, Westbrook, and Dawkins are gone. I think the G-men will compete with Dallas for the top spot in the division.

  2. Our Giants show, BBI Online Live, had the honor of interviewing Giants GM Jerry Reese last week and his sentiments were exactly the same as the blog here. Injuries really played a large role in the Giants demise last year.

Check out what he had to say here http://www.sidekickpro.com

What really bothers me about the Cowboys is Osi never seems to be able to sack Romo. And his mobility seems to let his recievers always find open space. The only reason we seem to beat them is because of Eli, he was money last year.

the scary part is deihl can’t block Ware one-V-one to save his life and unless Beatty steps up or we keep Boss in to help, Eli will continue to run for his life out there.

Talent wise the only player that scares me is Romo cause of his mobility. Without him they’re a joke. But the fact that he seems to choke against us when it counts gives me great satisfaction.

The Eagles are better then the Cowboys by far, especially on offense.

I have to disagree with you, the Eagles offense is nowhere near what the Cowboys is.
Do you really worry about how McCoy in the backfield?? They have one player, and the Cowboys put the blueprint out on him, beat him up at the line of scrimmage and he’ll crawl into a ball all day (sort of like Kevin Boss when Brian Dawkins is on the field).
Romo is nothing to worry about either, the guy chucks the ball up in the air and hopes someone is there to catch it, he’s been lucky, but when teams really center on the WR’s he gets picked. However, the Cowboys running game is very dangerous and cannot be overlooked.
But don’t worry, the pass rush will have no problem getting to Romo or Kolb this year (McNabb too for that matter).
